DNC protesters likely to have plenty of room — with a view

Protesters at next summer's Democratic National Convention will likely be allowed to rally within view of the Pepsi Center, a Denver city council committee was told today. Denver Deputy Police Chief Michael Battista said the city will probably be able to allow closer access for protesters than Boston did in 2004, since the Pepsi Center is not next to a freeway like Boston's Fleet Center.

"At the Fleet Center there were railroad tracks and a highway and the protesters were put on the other side," said Battista. "At the Pepsi Center you don't have those issues to deal with."

The committee had been scheduled to consider a controversial proclamation by city councilwoman Kathleen MacKenzie calling for Denver to respect the rights of demonstrators. However MacKenzie, who is term limited, will be replaced next week and the proclamation has been dropped for the time being.

A local group, Recreate 68, is planning to sponsor protests during the convention and has met with the police department. An attorney for the group told the committee they were committed to peaceful protest and simply wanted Denver to respect their constitutional rights.

I just had to write a scathing letter to the chief sponsor of the DNC Convention, Qwest, as a subscriber and shareholder. Here's what I sent to corporate hq:

I saw that Qwest is a major contributor to the DemocRAT convention in Denver in 2008. I am disappointed that a company I write a check to every month is siding with the party that thinks the real threats to America are George Bush and the weather, instead of gutless murderers and nuclear terrorism. Are you aware that major DemocRAT party members have compared our soldiers to the Nazi party of germany (Biden), that they have accused our soldiers of murder (Murhta) and that they have repeatedly called our President a liar, despite the track record of their convicted felon ex-President? Does your company believe this garbage and side with those who wish to murder and maim women and children around the world? Does Qwest believe that our soldiers are evil, and that murderous villains are working for a better world, along with the corrupt members of the crooked U.N.? Gosh I guess I will have to find another communications company, as I believe that those who side with our enemies are a true threat to America. I hope your family and friends will never see those they love have their throats slit or get pulverized in bombings by those who wish to destroy our country, aided on by a misinforming, lying media and their allies in the party that wishes to destroy our nation. You guys really suck and I will do all I can to bring down your disgraceful, anti-American company. Please contact me regarding my business with you - I will have thousands of people join me, I promise.

It was a pleasure watching on television as the LAPD corralled and herded thousands of raving rioters away from the DNC convention in L.A. — it was a thing of beauty.
