Wamp: Thompson is close to joining ’08 race
The Hill ^ | July 17, 2007 | Klaus Marre

Posted on 07/17/2007 5:52:08 PM PDT by West Coast Conservative

Rep. Zach Wamp (R-Tenn.) said Monday that he expects former Sen. Fred Thompson (R-Tenn.) to soon join the race for the White House.

“My view is that he’ll enter the race at some point just in the coming days,” said Wamp, a key supporter of Thompson.

The lawmaker said the actor turned senator turned actor did not want to join the race too soon but is “doing everything a presidential candidate should do.”

Thompson has long been expected to join the race and the Law & Order star has traveled the country and raised millions. He will take part in a large fundraising event in Washington, D.C. on July 29, but Wamp did not say when a formal announcement would come. The lawmaker said, however, that “a couple dozen members” of the House would publicly support Thompson at the event.

With regard to the race for the Republican nomination, Wamp said he believes it will come down to Thompson and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.

With Sen. John McCain’s (R-Ariz.) campaign fading, Wamp believes Thompson, Romney and former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani will become the “big three” in the Republican primary.

“I’ve talked to quite a few of McCain’s supporters in the House of Representatives, a couple in the United States Senate, that are concerned about McCain’s standing right now and the fact that he's lost his momentum,” Wamp said on MSNBC. He added that Thompson is the second choice of many McCain supporters.

The lawmaker also said that, with conservatives determining who will be the GOP candidate, Giuliani’s chances are not as good as those of Thompson and Romney.

“I feel like Giuliani’s running on 9/11 fumes and those fumes are slowly evaporating because there’s got to be the substance and the policy,” Wamp said. “And [Giuliani] doesn’t connect with the base of our party.”

Don’t fire until you see the white’s of their eyes..
I think after all this is over, Thompson needs to write “The Art of War in Campaigns”...

He had better be careful that he doesn’t wait too long. People are fickle. Advisers aren’t always right. And Republicans aren’t in much of a patient mood.

People are fickle

Also apathetic and aren't really enthused about politicians campaigning now for an election next year.

You are so right. I’m a Fred supporter today, tomorrow (if he waits overlong) I will move on. I need to get behind a candidate soon and spend my fundraising and proselytizing energies on someone who is willing to commit. May be early in the campaign, but everyone else has made their declaration and “daylight is wasting”.

I agree it is early for everyone, and I am all for slow and careful consideration. What hurts Fred is that everyone has been expecting the announcement for several weeks. I’m just listening to people and giving an assessment of the mood. In the big picture this might be good in that it will remind everyone that it is early and that they should not rush to judgment anyway. It just may not serve Fred well to wait much longer. In the age of technology, no one likes to wait for anything.

Right, if he is unwilling to make this decision, how can I expect him to make the “big” decisions as President? Let’s move it Fred, before it is too late.

Fred can always answer “it was too early...” when asked about this time-taking. Personally, I’m sick of the continuous political campaigning. We can’t seem to ever shut it off.

He can say, “it was too early”, but can his followers?

I agree with you on the constant political campaigning. Between local, state and national campaigns, seems all we hear about.

“the coming days”

If this is true, it’s about time. I want to see Fred in the next debate. His debut will help the GOP get some favorable attention.

"I need help with listing the mistakes in Fred's voting record on the NumbersUSA site."

Tell them that FRed has never, ever voted wrong on any issue except for CFR, and if he believes such a thing, he is simply dumb. Tell them that further postings of "mistakes" regarding FRed's voting record could summon the wrath of Chuck Norris if he continues.

Hopefully soon! Then they will put House MD back on. I like L&O, but House is my addiction. Not to mention, how good it will be having Fred in the race.

"What hurts Fred is that everyone has been expecting the announcement for several weeks."

With all the FRiendliness I can muster, sincerely, the folks here on this great forum don't really make up "everyone".

As another already posted, most of the American electorate, other than the die hard political junkies, don't even know who is running, much less have formed an opinion on who they might vote for, if they vote at all.

I, a consummate political junkie have only watched one of the "dog and pony shoes" called debates.

Fred will do quite well, when he does make the jump.

I’m a political junkie myself and you have watched one “Dog and Pony Show” more than I have.
