LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - As plaintiffs sobbed but Cardinal Roger Mahony sat silently in court, the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles and victims of clergy sex abuse on Monday finalized their record $660 million settlement.

Although Mahony publicly apologized after Mass on Sunday to the 508 plaintiffs, several victims voiced frustration that the leader of the largest U.S. Roman Catholic diocese will not have to testify in court.

I saw people on TV calling for him to resign. Unless the Pope gets involved, I don’t see that happening. IIRC, he’s pretty close to retirement anyway.

A bigger question.

This is from the article.

The lawsuit that was to be heard Monday involved a priest accused of molesting 18 boys but who died in 1987.

Can someone please explain to me why there is not one mention in this article or any TV coverage that most of these priests are homosexual predators?

You know the answer, but it's interesting that the PC Party Line on this one has actually been accepted by many Catholics, i.e., leftist Catholics. One example is a prolific blogger who calls himself Morning's Minion. This is what he said in regard to the LA settlement on the Vox Nova blog just a couple days ago:

Let's be clear, homosexuality is not to blame, and the fact that most of the abuse took place with boys rather than girls is not a result of homosexuality. Pedophilia is a sickness that is actually more common among heterosexuals.

$660 million settlement.

508 plaintiffs

What they don’t tell you is what the plaintiff’s attorneys will get from the settlement.

First they get raped by a Priest now they will get raped by attorneys. There is no justice in this life.

Yeah, I think that something definitely ought to be done about that. Its outrageous that one lawyer get something like 40% of $660,000,000 while the rest of the money gets split 500 ways between those who actually had to suffer. Its absolutely criminal.

Unless the Pope gets involved...

**************

If ANY of these perpetrators ("priests") now remain in the ordained clergy of the RCC--

If even ONE of these... has been hidden, transferred, or otherwise squirrelled away to cover up these sins of abuse... it remains a travesty of sins and lies...

These men are disqualified from the calling to ministry and should be permanently de-frocked... (and then arrested... and then drawn/quartered... then hung from the yard-arm... JMHO...)

There is no excuse for this level of abuse IN THE CHURCH!!

But worst yet.. the lies, the cover-ups, the manipulation of victims and their parents/caregivers... the parish transfers... or "staff relocations"....

All these "in-house" tactics!!! -- These same deeds have subsequently disqualify the bishops and archbishops who enabled these predators and facilitated these lies...

They should all resign... for the sake of the cause of Christ -- upon whose wonderful and holy Name they have brought despicable reproach...

May God indeed have great and compassionate mercy on the victims... and their families...

May the perps know that not one single perverse moment of their "ministry" will escape the judgment seat of Christ...

*******

Jesus said clearly... (Matthew 18:6-7 NKJV)

“Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to sin, it would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck, and he were drowned in the depth of the sea.

Woe to the world because of offenses! For offenses must come, but woe to that man by whom the offense comes!

************

I trust the pastor of Rome and his leadership infrastructure (at ALL levels in ALL nations) will clean the house-

Once for all...
And put an end to this plague of immorality...

It is waaaaaay past time!
God please send revival and renewal to your people worldwide!

From you post, Morning’s Menion stated

Let’s be clear, homosexuality is not to blame, and the fact that most of the abuse took place with boys rather than girls is not a result of homosexuality. Pedophilia is a sickness that is actually more common among heterosexuals.

Did someone ask him if he understands the definition of homosexual-——having sex with a member of the same sex. Men priests having sex with boys is homosexual. If it was male priests having sex with girls it would be hetro.

For liberals, homosexuality has become sacrosanct. Gays can do wrong, but gays cannot do wrong because of their gayness. It has to be something else--usually some evil in society or in their upbringing or somewhere besides their own free will.

I don't know where exactly Morning's Minion resides and goes to church, but I really hope it is LA. Because people who think like that deserve to pay and pay and pay.

You have to ask??? I have my suspicions about Roger the dodger. A few rotten apples invaded the seminaries, discouraged young men with true vocations, and recruited liberals and homosexuals/predators, back in the 60's. Right around the time Vatican II was rammed down everyone's throat.

New day, tough Pope.

Forgot about the damn lawyers. I know someone whose family participated in a class action lawsuit, back in the 80’s. Against a pharmaceutical company, IIRC. They “won” maybe 2k. Wasn’t even worth the pain.

I wonder what the archdiocese’s lawyer is going to get out of this? No justice is right!

Amen! Many of us Catholics, practicing and non attending alike, are thoroughly disgusted by the actions of the hierarchy regarding those criminals.

These wolves in sheeps clothing should have been turned into law enforcement immediately, instead of shuffling them around, and hushing everyone up. I believe that if that had been done, there would have been a lot less victims, and would have also served as a warning to others with the same inclinations.

Man’s justice can often be imperfect, but not the Lord’s. That is a very profound biblical verse, especially these days.

In case you haven’t guessed, I have never been a fan of Roger Mahoney. He has done a lot of damage, not just to the Church, but people’s perceptions of Catholicism.

I have faith that Pope Benedict will set things straight.

*****

I really admire your pastor... and pray for him regularly for the sake of the Gospel....

I trust he will take great courage, in the fear of the Lord (not man!), and act forthrightly in this difficult matter.

I am a practicing, contemporary, evangelical (do not care for the term "protestant") storefront church planter & "Kingdom Come!" kinda guy....

Regardless of dogma and doctrine, we are all in this together!!

Jesus remains... Lord of All
Have a great day!
