Labor bill should be killed on return
The Denver Post ^ | 07/15/2007

The U.S. Senate recently blocked a bill that would have junked 72 years of U.S. labor law and, for the first time, allowed the federal government to force employers and workers alike to sign union contracts without their consent.

The proposal, which passed the House with support from Rep. Mark Udall, contained an offensive and little-known provision that would have allowed a government arbitrator to impose a two-year contract on businesses and workers that actually specified wages and working conditions. Neither the employer nor the workers could appeal the decision.

The government has no place mandating how much private employers, for example, pay for their employees' health insurance.

We were extremely disappointed that Colorado's Sen. Ken Salazar abandoned his centrist values to vote with the liberal wing of his party when he voted to shut off debate on the bill, which could have forced a vote on the measure. He was elected as a moderate, and he simply can't become intoxicated by the ideals of his big-government liberal colleagues. He needs to maintain his independence.

And Udall, who wants to be Colorado's next senator, should know that elections here are won by wooing over moderate, independent-minded voters. Casting votes like this won't help.

The proposal died only after Senate Democrats could attract only one Republican vote, from Pennsylvania's Arlen Specter, to stop a GOP filibuster against the bill.

The misnamed Employee Free Choice Act also would have denied workers the right to a secret ballot on the question of whether they want to be represented by a union at all. The measure, which passed the House 241-185, is sure to be back because organized labor has made it the top priority in the new Democratic-controlled Congress.

Ken Salazar is a liberal. He was on the wrong side of the amnesty issue. And with this vote on forced unionization, he revealed his true colors to the Colorado electorate. Even our liberal Governor, Bill Ritter, was smart enough to veto a forced unionization bill sent him by the Democratic legislature. Someone who wants unions organized without a vote of the employees has no business representing our state in the Senate.

The Udalls have always been elitists, only too happy to redistribute other peoples money.

This is to insure he'll get union money and footsoldiers.

And Salazar is no "moderate." The leadership gives him a few freebies, but not on a money vote like this.

This is very, very bad idea. This law would generate more strikes and union activity that could wipe out businesses in the USA. Another rock in the wall.

Leave it to a leftist rag like the Denver Post to claim Salazar is or ever was a “centrist.” This newspaper is itself leftist while thinking it is moderate and reports fairly. It isn’t and it doesn’t. (But, you already knew that. LOL)
