LONDON — British police closed at least 11 Tesco supermarkets across the country Saturday because of a security alert, authorities said.

The manager at a in Barrhead, near Glasgow, told Britain's Press Association that staff were sent home around 12:30 p.m. (1330 GMT) after a power failure. But an unidentified employee at a neighboring shop said police had told him there had been a bomb threat.

Police in Hertfordshire, where Britain's largest supermarket has its headquarters, said no one had been hurt and that the move was a precaution. Police did not immediately give further details.

Sitting here, in Ireland; just checking in to FR for updates on news; and this is the firt I've heard of this; albeit, not so far away - and shopping 'Tesco' today.

As to Islamic 'discontent'; did notice in food court last night, not far from Tesco entrance; a group of Muslims having dinner. They sat not far from a 'barbeque' place, a pizza counter; where sausage was offered and hot dogs; and of course, MCDonald's. (And there was 'Eddie Rocket's/with American fries ;^)) Could not identify their 'food choices' for the evening. But mused that they seemed not to be bothered in the least; if only by 'contamination' from the near-by trash can.

OTOH. . .there is a young black woman that I met here; she is being sponsored by a Church and though university trained; she is doing housework and some child care so as to take care of herself.

She left Africa with hopes of her children soon to join her and her husband; but he died unexpectedly, soon after arriving here and so, by custom her sons were given to her husband's brothers; leaving her daughter as her 'only child'. She is trying to get her here.

Should she return to Africa; she jeopardizes her life; and moreso; that of her family, because of her leaving to begin with. Because these people are Christians; they are under threat of the Muslims who are trying to convert or more easily, just wanting to eliminate them.

Her life is so sad; so pathetic. Am wondering more often; that anyone, would - could. . .choose to identify themselves as Muslim; whether their faith is full-blowbn or even null/void - or just moderate. While realizing it is the radical elements within this religion; am nonetheless, feeling increasingly intolerant because of the pain this Faith is bringing to people around the world.

So, unfortunately, had very mixed feelings as I watched the Muslims last night; knowing too; they probably may have 'escaped' as well; but not feeling nearly as sympathetic as I feel towards this other young and desperate victim of Islamic intolerance.

A man has been charged with four offences after a series of bomb threats led to the closure of 14 Tesco stores across the country.
Philip McHugh, 51, from Clitheroe, Lancs, faces two charges of blackmail and two of making bomb hoaxes.

He is due to appear before Stevenage Magistrates’ Court.

Hertfordshire Police said no other person is being sought in connection with the inquiry. Threats led to the evacuation of Tesco stores on 14 July.
