A few weeks ago, I was at a show. On stage, I said, “Y’all people” as part of a joke. The crowd sucked all the air out of the room in a “did he just say that?” hush.

I was the only white guy in the place. I was meaning “You people of the audience” They heard it as, “You people of black color”.

It was like an Imus moment to them.

It’s a good thing I didn’t say, “Niggardly.”
