Ex-Abu Ghraib guard named to rec board
Lynndie England, one of the most recognizable figures of the Abu Ghraib prison scandal in Iraq, has a new role as a member of this Eastern Panhandle city's volunteer recreation board.
England, 24, contributed her knowledge of computers, electronics and graphics for Keyser's Strawberry Festival, which helped her land the unpaid position, said Roy Hardy, the England family's attorney.
"When (council members) saw how hard she worked for the festival, they didn't hesitate to put her on the board," said Hardy, who is also a board member. "If it wasn't for her, we wouldn't have been able to pull off (the Strawberry Festival). She was an absolute asset."
England handled the festival's advertising, scheduled entertainment acts and helped set up vendor booths and stages, among other things. She also helped organize a spring fishing contest and the city's Independence Day activities.
"Basically we recognized her this year for helping out," Keyser Mayor Glen Shumaker said Friday.
"She's put in several hundred hours. She's a very hard worker," said Christy Hardy, the board's chairwoman.
The recreation board also organizes a snowman-building contest each winter honoring city native Jack Rollins, who co-wrote the song "Frosty the Snowman."
England, who does clerical work in Hardy's law firm, didn't immediately return a telephone message left with the office Friday.
England was released in March from a military prison in San Diego after serving half her 36-month sentence. She was convicted of six counts involving prisoner mistreatment. Eleven U.S. soldiers have been convicted of crimes at the prison near Baghdad.
England was in several images taken in late 2003 by U.S. guards at Abu Ghraib.

Apparently she’s gainfully employed and doing a lot more volunteer work than most people do. You go, Lynndie.
We can make jokes of course, but I wish her well.
She seems to be doing better now that she is no longer under Cheneys mind control.
It hurt the reputation of our troops and caused a hell of a lot of bad press for our country and this administration.
She’s a disgrace and should be on a rec board - in prison.
my tv-moron neighbor identified with lynndie,
saying that lynndie was a “victim”.
i almost puked, and said lock her up and toss the key. if you can’t be responsible for your actions, you don’t belong in the u.s. military.
I’m not making excuses for Lynndie England, but it’s my understanding that her elevator didn’t exactly go all the way to the top floor?
In case you all dont remember an event on September 11th,2001, she really didnt do anything all that bad to those dirt turds. In fact , if I was at a prison filled with Osama Kool Aid drinkers,Id be dancing on their corpses and sending the videos to CNN and FOX.
You are the disgrace.
Are you with CAIR?
