Minneapolis in the race for Green (Party) convention

Move over Republicans -- the Green Party may beat you to bringing a national political convention to the Twin Cities next year.

Minneapolis Green activists announced Thursday that they're wooing their party for Minneapolis in July 2008.

They'll make the case at this weekend's national Green gathering in Reading, Pa., that Minneapolis' progressive politics -- and some party electoral successes -- make the city a good fit.

A decision is expected by Aug. 15.

Chicago and Detroit are also vying for the Green convention, which is expected to bring about 1,500 people to the host city, organizers of the Minneapolis bid said.

"It's going to be a little tough," said Green City Council Member Cam Gordon, who will make the city's pitch along with Green Park Commissioner Annie Young. He said a 2004 pitch for the convention lost out to Milwaukee.

If this convention does come to town, I hope the Chamber of Commerce isn't expecting a windfall in dollars spent and increased tax revenue.

Given the Green Party's growing strength here in the People's Republic of Minneapolis, it probably would make sense for them to come here.

Comment or opinions - anyone?

I sure hope they can find a venue large enough to hold the expected crush of humanity that will be attending

A junior high auditorium, or perhaps a medium sized banquet hall.

1500 people from all over the country? At Bezerkley, they can find that many moonbats in just one department on campus.

It’s a slam dunk the Greenies won’t bring in as much money to the Twin Cities as another ‘Rod n Reel’ show.

The only Green Party guy I can remember getting elected in Minneapolis (City Council) was eventually hauled off by the Feds and convicted of taking bribes. Are there more?

Is this why they lowered the age of consent to 14?

I hope this doesn’t get in the way of the “asswipe” convention! Never mind, same thing.

Yes, there was Natalie Johnson-Lee, a black racist who ran under the Green Party banner.

She was elected in 2001 and was thrown out in 2005 after being re-districted in DFL’er Don Samuels’ district.

She was in my jury pool back in ‘04. What a bitch! She said several times out loud “I’m an elected official. I shouldn’t have to do jury duty”.

On a side note, Dick Enrico (the owner of 2nd Wind Fitness) was also in my jury pool. Chances are, you’ve seen his TV ads. He was a pain too. You could tell by his body language that he thought jury duty was beneath him.

“this weekend’s national Green gathering in Reading, Pa”

That’s near me. I thought the air smelled like Patchouli Oil this morning.

The only question I have... is why did the RNC choose it?

God, I can imagine the looney Greenies coming out from their huts along Uptown and Grand Ave. First Gov Turnbuckle, then Ellison, now this???? Aren’t we Minnesotans the laughingstock of the nation already????

It had a lot to do with the fact that Minnesota is (or was)considered a purple state.

Up ‘til last November, the GOP handled three of the 4 constitutional offices (including Governor), 1 of 2 Senate seats, 4 of 8 US House seats and the state house of representatives.

Well, things didn’t go so well last November - but the RNC already committed to Minnesota at that time.

Natalie Johnson-Lee: “I’m an elected official. I shouldn’t have to do jury duty”.

Now that’s the kind of devotion to public service I’m looking for in a representative
