WASHINGTON, July 12, 2007 – Afghan National Army Corps and coalition forces killed 11 Taliban fighters today in a five-hour firefight near the village of Sarsina, in Oruzgan province, Afghanistan. Insurgents hiding in a tree line and a compound fired at the combined patrol with small arms and rocket-propelled grenades. Coalition forces estimated that more than 15 enemy fighters were in the compound.
In another operation, the Afghan National Auxiliary Police killed five Taliban fighters when they were ambushed on patrol south of the Sangin district center, west of the Helmand River in Helmand province today.
In other Afghanistan operations, the Afghan National Police detained a key terrorist leader yesterday in the Bati Kot district of Nangarhar province.
Haji Raiz was arrested and turned over to coalition forces. Raiz is considered to be a major improvised-explosive-device facilitator for the Taliban and al Qaeda in the Nangarhar area. He is believed to support suicide bombers as they move through eastern Afghanistan by providing funding, materials and safe haven.
