Huckabee is a political inconvenience, a destroyer of stereotypes. He is probably best known as the fellow who lost 100 lbs. in a year, and made living well through exercise and good nutrition one of his signature issues as Governor. But the real significance of Huckabee--and, to a lesser extent, Brownback--is that he represents the introduction of a new constituency into the political process: "Second Commandment" Christians, those more interested in salvation than damnation, people like the California pastor Rick Warren, author of The Purpose Driven Life. Huckabee says, "Our church in Little Rock is very similar to Rick Warren's. We've gone from 25 members to about 5,000 in eight years. Our focus has been to minister to people who were otherwise neglected. We built a ministry center before we even had a sanctuary. We held our services in warehouses until a year or two ago." The center contains a range of faith-based initiatives: welfare to work, job training, programs for recovering alcoholics and drug addicts, a food bank. "We are a multicultural, multiracial congregation, with rich and poor," Huckabee says. "I play the bass in the Praise band."

I never gave Huckabee a serious look. Now I know why! LOL!
This is just Time magazine trying to spread dissention among Republicans by sterotyping them as either loose-living hedonists or Hell-fire & Damnation Christians. Oh yes, add a third type — cultists who are probably secret polygamists. I’m not buying any of it. Don’t slam our fine Republican candidates — any of them stand head and shoulders about the alternatives.
Time backs Hillary and Barack.
Duncan Hunter has a coherent platform and a niche as the conservative candidate. Ron Paul is holding down the libertarian front. Brownback could represent the Bible-thumpers but his campaign has been very disappointing to me. Hunter makes Tancredo's one-note campaign redundant. Gilmore and TT have no campaigns. McCain is on the way out.
Obviously I'd like to get rid of Rudy and Romney the most, but they're not giving up any time soon.
Without the truth about damnation, what's the need for salvation? What are you being saved from? Poverty? Hunger? Joblessness?
Rick Warren has signed on to the Global Warming crapola.
Anyone that can’t see through Rick Warren’s false teaching isn’t worth voting for in my book.
I tend to agree. All this ‘get healthy’ stuff reminds me of old german propaganda films I’ve seen on the History Channel.
yep.
I think you nailed it. It’s the social gospel/liberation theology.
My exact thought the moment I started reading the article.
Without knowing about damnation, how does one truely know about grace?
The ugly, redeeming truth that never/rarely seems to see the light of day in a Purpose Driven church.
Have you read the Purpose-Driven Church? After hearing lots of criticism of his seeker-friendly methods, I read the book. It was not nearly as bad as I thought it would be. One thing that his critics seem to miss is that the seeker-friendly church model does not replace the traditional discipleship church model but is done in addition. His church does the traditional service for members on Wednesday and uses the Sunday service for outreach to the unchurched.
I'm not a fan of Rick Warren's methods and their apparent superficiality but I commend him on his concern for the Great Commission. It would be nice to see more churches have the same enthusiasm about presenting the Gospel to the lost.
What?
This writer is obviously out of touch. He's probably never even watched the 700 club.
I’m sorry Huckabee mentioned Rick Warren here; it detracts from the crediblity of the church work. It appears Huckabee’s church is doing what the church should do, and did — before the welfare state became so prevalent.
Well, this tells me Huckabee’s judgement is very suspect.
PING!!!
DEFINATELY OFF MY RADAR SCREEN.

Sure seems to fit the name HUCKaBEE, I don’t think he is Presidential Timber, plus who would vote for anyone from Arkansas?
