He said legal immigration should be suspended until we got illegal immigration under control. That is not an unreasonable or irrational stance.

Actually, what he said was he'd cut off all immigration until we have some time to assimilate ourselves and the mass of humanity that has been dropped among us, EXCEPT for asylum seekers and family members of US Citizens.

Now when you consider The Bush administration authorized the resettlement of 70,000 refugees (asylum) to the U.S. this year and a million or so more 'family members and a few million Iraqis that have to go somewhere, we'd still be letting in a million or two.

Tancredo actually has advocated a “time out” which would completely halt legal immigration for a period of a few years and allow some time to assimilate all the legal immigrants that have come.

That *is* “anti-immigration” and not just “anti-illegal-immigration”.

His website list his position as only a reduction in legal immigration, and not the “time out” he spoke of at the debates.

“America must also reexamine its legal immigration policies.
Since 1990, that number has been roughly one million yearly - and that doesn’t count illegal aliens. America
should reduce legal immigration to 250,000 people a year, which will allow the newcomers to assimilate.”

Anti immigration? That sounds like he's pro-immigration to me. At any rate, it's no secret that our infrastructure and cities are taxed (literally and figuratively) to the breaking point and an immigration time out is a good idea.

I agree it’s a good idea, but that doesn’t change the terminology.

Any time you are advocating a reduction or a stop to something, you are “anti”, even if it is only in the short-term like Tancredo’s position.
