Pa. budget deal was eased by windfall from electric tax

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) - Electric-rate shock for consumers could produce a windfall for Governor Ed Rendell's alternative energy agenda.

Rendell originally touted a new per-kilowatt electricity surcharge as way to raise at least 60 (M) million dollars a year.

The idea was to pay back 850 (M) million dollars in borrowing to subsidize alternative energy projects and electricity conservation efforts.

But while state Senate Republicans say they support the program's goal, they oppose the surcharge.

Instead, they say the program can be supported by an existing tax on electricity bills, which are expected to rise substantially as rate caps expire around the state through 2010.

The resulting gush of tax revenue is expected to be big enough to finance the program, although Republicans say they are also looking for other ideas, too.

Any Marylanders know how well the new Baltimore electric rates are going over with the masses?

Rendel is unbelievable when it comes to raising taxes. As mayor of Philadelphia he introduced a 4-4.5%(4.5% for residents, 4% for nonresidents) city wage tax on everyone who worked within the city limits, a 10% tax on all beer, wine, & liquor sold in bars and restaraunts, & even floated the idea of taxing the people who lived in the suburbs surounding the city.
Passes himself off well as “Joe sixpack” looking out for the working man but, he’s left of Lenin.
