Former Newark Mayor Sharpe James Indicted

POSTED: 9:50 pm EDT July 11, 2007 UPDATED: 1:35 pm EDT July 12, 2007 NEWARK, N.J. -- A federal grand jury indicted former Newark Mayor Sharpe James Thursday on corruption charges.

James, 71, was charged with using city-issued credit cards to spend extravagantly on himself, eight women and others during vacations and trips to locations such as Puerto Rico, Martha's Vineyard, the Dominican Republic, and Rio de Janeiro, U.S. Attorney Christopher J. Christie and state Attorney General Anne Milgram announced.

In the 33-count indictment, James is also charged with fraud for allegedly facilitating and approving the cut-rate sales of city-owned land to Tamika Riley, one of his female companions.

Riley allegedly collected hundreds of thousands of dollars from the land sales and is also charged with fraud, authorities said.

James was expected to turn himself in to the FBI and appear with Riley in federal court Thursday afternoon.

Were any of these women prostitutes? Were any of them not his wife?

Inquiring minds want to know when this will become fodder for late night talk show hosts.

Must be a Democrat...seven paragraphs of story, and not one mention of his party affiliation.

Sharpe James—is that a name-reversal typo, or is that really his name?

Bingo. It’s sad how much you can tell about a politician in trouble based on what they don’t report.

I don’t think they allow Republicans in Newark.

You noticed that too? I thought I was the only one doing so.

It's the first thing for which I look. It means that either I am becoming more politically astute, or (more likely) that I have too much time on my hands.

Sharpe James is his real name.

He was untouchable as mayor. For some reason, which escapes me, nobody wanted to confront his manifest corruption. There was some special aura about him that deflected all criticism, while other mayors of other cities in NJ were prosecuted and convicted over the years.

I can’t quite put my finger on what was that one, specific characteristic of Sharpe James that made people ignore his crimes. I’m sure if I think about it long enough, it will come to me.

Sharpe and Tamika sitting in a tree,

K-I-S-S-I-N-G.

Isn’t it staggering that voters keep returning meatheads like Mr. James to office?

I’d love to see what this Tamika chick looks like.

Pictures?

From 1962 to 2006 Newark was ruled by three completely corrupt mayors: Hughie Addonizio, Kenny Gibson and Sharpe James.

Addonizio basically gave control of the city to Tony Boy Boiardo, and was convicted of accepting bribes after he left office in 1970. He did a 5 year bid in federal prison.

Gibson abdicated his executive responsibilities to black militants like LeRoi Jones (who goes by the nom-de-plume Amiri Baraka). After leaving office in 1986 he and his fellow race hustlers were indicted on numerous corruption charges and he pled guilty to fraud.

Sharpe James was the smartest and lasted the longest - he just lined his own pockets.

While these three dirtbags ran Newark, the population dropped by 30%, unemployment is now 12% and has been as high as 20%.

Newark's per capita income is less than 40% of the US average.

Newark does not have a single movie theater for 280,000 people. It barely has 10 non-fastfood restaurants. The remains of its financial district are connected by a guarded walkway to the commuter train station so white collar workers never have to chance it on Newark's streets.

Newark and Trenton are among the worst cities in America in terms of quality of life.
