L.A. Times Explains Missing Passage from Article on Fred Thompson’s Alleged Lobbying..

The L.A. Times has appended the following paragraph to its online version of the story about Fred Thompson’s lobbying:

An earlier version of this article included a passage in which Judith DeSarno said Fred Thompson reenacted a cowboy death scene from one of his movies. The version of the article that was printed in Saturday’s newspaper replaced the earlier, online version. That newer version omitted the reference, because confirmation of the name of the movie could not be made before the story got reprinted. Based on DeSarno’s account, the scene that she said Thompson reenacted appears to be from “Keep the Change,” a TNT television western that would have been in production around the time of the lunch and dinner that she described.

Here is the Internet Movie Database entry for the movie. Interesting that the paper published something online that wasn’t yet confirmed. Are there different standards for online stories vs. print at the L.A. Times?

The blogosphere has forced the paper to explain why it whisked away the sentence in question — and that’s a good thing. But the rumors of the death of the story’s credibility were greatly exaggerated.

By the way, I don’t think the story, if true, means that pro-life conservatives should despair at the idea of a Thompson candidacy. All this story means, if it’s true, is that he didn’t feel strongly enough about abortion in 1991 to turn down work for an abortion rights group. That doesn’t mean he agrees with the agenda of abortion rights groups — or that he would appoint bad judges, which is the only relevance of any of this.

Trust me, his judges would be better than Hillary’s.

Sounds like both Fred and the Tmes are sticking to their stories. One is lying.

Horse$hit, removing that fact that couldn't be confirmed when it was essentially a quote has the effect of covering up a major discrepancy that impeaches the speaker's credibility on all the points they are asserting. Such complicity makes the LAT a party to the lie which goes to their credibility. Their internal policy should call for an in-line editor's note under such circumstances. It is one thing to pull a reporter's misstatement but quite another thing to pull a quoted misstatement.

I’m just astonished there are so many people who find it incredulous that someone could change their opinion on a controversial subject like abortion. What do they think people are, pre-programmed ‘bots unaffected by their life experience?

Sheesh.

No one cares that he changed his position. It’s the constant tapdancing that is troublesome.

Not troublesome. Thinking people occasionally have doubts, certainties, and everything else in between as they go through life. Give me thinking people, not hide-bound reactionaries and ‘bots, any day.

Give me a man who knows himself. And give me one who does not obfuscate.

No one fully “knows himself.” Are you the same person you were 20 years ago? Is anyone you know the same? That’s why they call it “growing” — and when you stop doing that, rust sets in.

The libs are getting worried. They see their gains in 2006 becoming losses in 2008 and therefore they will be attacking any frontrunning GOP candidates.

Trust me, his (Thompson's) judges would be better than Hillary’s.

And Hunter's judges would be (far) better than Thompson's.

Unfortunately for the Hunterites, I have about as much chance of being the GOP nominee next year as Congressman Duncan Hunter. Here in Reality World, many conservatives view Senator Fred Thompson as the most conservative of the top tier of Republican presidential candidates.

Just ask this question ~ was it Fred or the LAT that lied to the Audit Bureau of Circulation (ABC) and the US Postal Service about its circulation figures.

Case closed.

The “Hunterites” are not the enemy. Duncan Hunter is a fine and an honorable person; a real man, intelligent, worthy and with a blue ribbon record or military and public service.
Sadly he cannot be the nominee. He does not have sufficient name or face recognition, funding or nationwide network or staff to facilitate a successful run for the candidacy, no less the actual job.
There are no states that can be carried by Hunter.
However, he would be a wonderful selection as running mate, or for an appropriate cabinet position.

What tapdancing? Fred had a 100% pro-life voting record during his 8 year tenure in the Senate. If that isn't enough to satisfy the buzzing gnats, then I guess we'll just have to nominate him without them.
