What you are missing is that he deems your driving over the speed limit to be reckless. And should not be allowed.

What he's missing is that there are uses for performance cars that have nothing to do with either the speed limit or public roads. What he's also missing is the fact that there are laws in place to deal with speeding and other forms of unsafe driving that have nothing to do with speed.

What I'm missing is an explanation for why anyone who considers himself a conservative would think his opinion on necessary horsepower should have any bearing on what other people drive.

Within the context of motor vehicle laws “reckless” has specific legal definitions. “Opinions” as to what constitutes “reckless” are like, well, rectums... ;-)
