Franken Leads Incumbent in Fundraising

WASHINGTON (AP) - Democratic Senate candidate Al Franken raised nearly $2 million in the latest reporting period, pulling in more money than both his Democratic rival and the Republican incumbent, Sen. Norm Coleman.

Franken, a comedian-turned-candidate, announced Monday he had pulled in $1.9 million in the second quarter of the year, covering April through June. Last week, Coleman, R-Minn., said he had raised about $1.6 million in the period, and Democrat Mike Ciresi said he had raised $750,000.

Ciresi, a wealthy lawyer, didn't begin raising money until May.

"It's unusual for a challenger to have this kind of quarter," said Steven S. Smith, a political science professor at Washington University in St. Louis. "It is a very impressive showing."

Coleman still enjoys a healthy advantage in cash on hand, ending the reporting period with $3.8 million, compared to just under $2 million for Franken and $625,000 for Ciresi.

According to Franken's campaign, more than 95 percent of his contributions in the last reporting period were $100 or less.

Franken's emphasis on money raised from small donors could be a way to deflect criticism of "Hollywood" money, which he has tapped from friends and colleagues from the entertainment industry. In the first quarter of the year, scores of actors, writers, producers and others from that field contributed to Franken's campaign.

The extent of their support in the latest period won't be known until Franken files his report on July 15, but the campaign did volunteer that its latest contributors include actors Edward Norton and Meg Ryan.

I suspect he might win. The American people seem to be getting dumber and whimpier now. In any case, money isn’t everything. If the candidate with more money always won, we would still have Sens. Santorum, Talent, Burns, and Dewine. :(

I have no doubt about it. These people up here make no effort to learn about what is going to be coming down on them. I can see it now -— the cow-eyed look they’ll have after people are blown apart. “Gosh, we gave into all of their demands and they still don’t like us. We gots to try harder.”

Most of the others around this area are just plain apathetic and could care less. I am the only conservative person on my block and talking to these loons is like trying to talk to a rock. Of course, you can imagine what they think of me.

Jihad under the radar means our radar, too. I doubt that the U.S. gov’t knows what is going on in semi-out-of-the-way places like Minn, MN or Worcester, MA or Barker Rd, TX.
They’re just looking for the legality of a warrant. Just like with Z. Moussaui’s laptop. If they had JUST opened it, where would we be today?

I talk w/ them as much as they let me.

The one thing that gets them is this - I always try to engage people civily and politely (no matter what I am think about their political leanings). They expect conservatives to be MEAN and RUDE!!

I am somewhat surprised when they agree w/ me at times but they will not get over the thought that they can not be thinking like a conservative.

We all just have to keep plugging away at them.

I agree that the US govt. is in denial over the extent they have allowed our country to slip to.
