One other question along the lines of my previous post:

Has anybody ever _bothered_ to _ask_ the Ordinary or the Pastor of the Council’s associated parish his opinion?

“Brother Joe Blow from our council is also a member of the legislature. He has repeatedly voted for pro-abort measures, has spoken publicly in favor of homosexual marriage, and has threatened to try to have the Church’s tax exemption revoked.

Should the Knights still consider him to be a practical Catholic?”

Dear markomalley,

I don’t know whether that’s happened in these particular cases.

I do know that happens. I’ve had the discussions myself (although not about politicians who vote for pro-homosexual marriage legislation, having no members who are Massachusetts state legislators).

But where there is a question, I ask. It's only happened once or twice.

And the priest has always told me not to worry.

I took this to mean that either outward appearances were deceiving, or that the priest was engaged in counseling the man on the question about which I asked.

It could have also meant that the priest was shirking his duty.

Dear markomalley,

Well, we had our Installation yesterday. We had a great time.

Unfortunately, the day for me was hectic (being installed as Grand Knight), and I never got to ask the state officers my questions.

I’ll keep this issue in the back of my mind, and query folks as I meet with them. I think that you’ve raised good points, although, from my perspective, I still think that that any sort of revocation or suspension of membership in the Order for what these men did must be initiated by the priests or bishops involved.

One thing that I did note during the Installation ceremony, as our Council Chaplain (who is also our parish priest) was installed, the District Deputy specifically charged him with the duty to assure that all the men of the Council are practicing Catholics.

That reinforces my previously-stated views.
