This week's prize for honest liberalism goes to Michigan's John Dingell, who is having fun with his fellow Democrats while also making a useful point about the politics of global warming. The venerable Chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee--first elected in 1955--has announced that he plans to introduce as early as this week a new tax on carbon emissions.
Now, that's the way to clear a Capitol Hill hearing room. Americans are already miffed at paying $3 a gallon for gasoline, a fact that has the Members assailing oil companies on a daily basis. So the last thing Democrats seeking re-election want to do is pile on another dollar or two a gallon in taxes--especially in the name of "saving the planet" from the speculative danger of global warming 50 or 100 years from now. Their voters have to deal with the more immediate danger of missing the mortgage payment.

Oh, please, please, introduce that bill. Let’s see who will co-sponsor.
PROVE IT FIRST!
Personally I would love to see a bill introduced that would tax people like Gore and Edwards for their energy uses. They claim to be for cleaner air but use more energy than 12 average people. The bill would read something like this: If you own a home worth x amount of dollars and spend X amount on energy(this amount would be determined by apraising Gore’s home and Edward’s home and adding up their energy cost)you would have to pay twice that amount in taxes yearly, no exceptions. I would love to see Gores face and listen to him spin! Also, all movie stars who earn more than 1 million a picture would have to pay 50 percent of their income(on top of IRS payments)to the government to offset their energy uses. We would see a retreat on GW that would blot out the sun with the dust. I don’t see why Republicans won’t do things like this and stop the insanity.
Because the Republicans have no balls and no spine and are a bad as the Dems.
Correct answer, you win the prize!(sorry just kidding, no prize but you did hit the nail on the head)
Yea, it’s pretty obvious. Once we let Sandy Berger off I knew out party was finally down the toilet bowl.Dems and Republicans , 2 sides of the same coin these days.
You got it my friend. It’s all a scam to seperate people from their money ..Nothing more. Sad part is most people are falling for it , more each day.
Finally! Somebody figured it out. Congrats.
The mood of the country now is mad at Congress and the people has seen just how out of touch these demonrats really are.
So please please Dingel just introduce the bill and the American people will cut off the balls of every democrat in 2008 (including Hillary's too I hope!) for creating this cruel burden on the country.
What most people are only now just waking up to realize is the while damm stupid implementation of the Ethanol for fuel - all in the name of Global Warming scare.
As I was explaining to someone recently that
1) growing corn to get ethanol is barely break-even in terms of the amount of energy you put in vs what you get out
2) if you put 10 gallons of ethanol in an ethanol burning car vs the same amt of gasoline in an identical car that burns regular gasoline, when their fuel runs out the ethanol burner will have stopped 2/3 of the way
3) Using corn as the grain to get ethanol is a very poor choice since its now competing directly with food & feed for livestock (chickens, pigs, cattle, etc) and as a result all foods are now costing from 20-50% more than they did last summer.
So every time you go to buy groceries and see just how little you are getting for your money, just thank Al Gore and his Global Warming disciples for the ethereal sense of comfort of saving the Earth (and your hungry bellies) since your high grocery bill is helping to fight Global Warming.
Also, as the leader of this movement and OWNER of the CARBON OFFSETS Business he is entitled to get rich off it and do as he please RIGHT?
Your ethanol objections are bogus. dingell, on the other hand, is blocking an awful bill passed in the senate because he represents Detroit and the all knowing lawyers want to mandate new CAFE standards. That is the last thing a recovering auto industry needs.
If only the Republicans had the political instinct and common sense to see the opportunity Dingell is offering here. If only the Republicans had brains. If only the Republicans were... Republicans.
A few are. Not many. Most are whimps, wusses and boring spineless beaurocrats. Too bad. There was a time when I had high hopes for the Republican Party.
I still vote for them — I’d rather vote for the Stupid Party than the Evil Party any day — but my high hopes (with a few exceptions) are long gone.
sorry: bureaucrats
(spelling error in my last post)
Is anyone ever going to run the numbers on this ridiculous charade? There are six or seven billion people in this world, and they all burn something every day of their lives.
Who really thinks a dent can be made in that?
No they are not. Will you please post figures for your objections.
ALL my points are valid & current.
Its been proved & shown even on TV that producing ethanol does not produce and energy surplus, gives you LESS MPG and has driven up the prices for a lot of foodstuff (milk, eggs, meats, etc) since there is just a limited supply of corn to go around.
I have seen these quibbles before, and I am not persuaded by them. They take a very narrow view. Couldn’t you just as easily post four drawbacks to gasoline ignoring its many selling points among which it is the work engine of the world? Then you could pretend that you are the smartest man in the world and go on to your Mensa meeting. /s
I know what you're saying, but somehow the mentality of the Republicans seems to be: "Golly gee...we lost the last election big-time to the Democrats, so we better become like the Democrats so we don't keep losing." The Republicans have abandoned the very principles that put them in power and are now the same tax-and-spend jerks as the Dimocrats. When are they going to realize that I know how to spend my money better than they do.
Yep. The primary reason for the Kyoto Protocol is to wound the economic mite of the US in international markets. It is specifically designed to penalize a developed country while turning a blind eye to the environmental damages generated by a developing country. At its core is a redistribution of the economic burdens away from Third World countries onto the US.
