As if the embattled White House didn't have enough problems, it's apparently decided to follow a policy that insults the families of Marines killed in Vietnam.
Christina Stacey, spokeswoman for U.S. Rep. Jason Altmire, D-4, McCandless Township, called to tell us about the saga of Ellwood City resident Allys Boyer, 84, and her two daughters, Sandra Lee Boyer of Zelienople and Beverly Boyer of Arizona.
Allys Boyer's 22-year-old son, Cpl. Larry Boyer, was killed in May 1969 while on patrol.
The Boyer family wanted to visit the Vietnam Memorial to see Larry's name and tour the White House on Thursday, so they asked Altmire's office for help after they were told they needed to make tour arrangements months in advance, Stacey said.
Stacey said Altmire's office told the White House of Boyer's status as a Gold Star mother and got her in for a tour.
Incredibly, after finding out that Boyer's son was killed in Vietnam, the White House rescinded its permission, saying that the preferential treatment was only for families of those killed in Iraq and Afghanistan.
An angry Altmire then pulled some rank to schedule his own tour of the White House, accompanied by the Boyers, of course.
"It seems outrageous to implement a policy that values one service member's family's sacrifices over others," Altmire wrote to President Bush. "At the very least, mothers such as Ms. Boyer deserve the opportunity to visit the White House, one of the symbols of the freedom and democracy which her son lost his life defending."
Considering that Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney and several other administration chicken-hawks did everything short of marrying their dogs to get out of serving in Vietnam, does it really surprise anyone that their minions would have no respect for the families of those killed there?
Wait a minute. Could it be that they actually feel guilty about their service dodging and don't want any reminders so close to home?
Nahhh. Silly us. That would require having a conscience.
Altmire KNEW IN ADVANCE that the request would be turned down, because he had a copy of the RULE BOOK. But he forged ahead anyway in an attempt to embarrass the Bush Administration.
When his office first contacted the WH, they "forgot" to tell them that the Gold Star family in question {good democrats all) were Viet Nam vintage!
The program excludes anyone but the newest families, because the program would become instantly unmanageable. The reasons for this exclusion apparently is clearly established in the rules for the program, which all Congressional offices have, according to Jim Quinn.
When the WH ran the SSN of the family, they found out that the family didn't qualify under the program.
BUT ALTMIRE'S OFFICE ALREADY KNEW THAT.
So when the WH denied the request, the sneaky buggers slipped the "news" to this partisan hack Prose, who writes really good propaganda for the ratz all the time.
Apparently, there are three or four other congressmen that are running the same scam, and then getting an "unbiased" journalist in local papers to run the story.
This is what the rat party has become.
What service dodging?
Wow..yellow Journalism at is best.
Never mind that good Old Bubba said he hated the military. Never mind that the Left has displayed a constant hate for all the military.
Altmire is a turd...
Another lib who won’t let the facts get in the way of a good story. W flew fighters in the National Guard and volunteered to go to Viet Nam not once, but twice, and was turned down each time.
Never mind that President Bush spent 2-years full time learning to fly jet fighters and patrolling American air space during the cold war.
Did you serve your country? or were you a lifelong Govt leech?
Not only flying fighter, but flying one that were very hard to handle

This here was the “setup”. Altmire’s flunkies deliberately withheld from the WH the fact that this so-called gold star mom was in fact Viet Nam era. They did this so that WHEN the WH responded with the rules of the program, and rejected the request, Altmire could stage a hissy fit for show and frivolity.
Quinn speculates that the reason these congresscritters didn’t go to the MSM, but to local hacks, is because even a partisan rag like the WaPo would have to fess up on this being a deliberate set up.
Presidental military service since FDR:
Truman, Army WWI
Eisenhower, Army, WWI & WWII
Kennedy, Navy WWII
Johnson, Navy, WWII
Nixon, Navy, WWII
Ford, Navy, WWII
Carter, Navy, Cold War
Reagan, Army Air Corps, WWII
Bush Sr., Navy WWII
Clinton, draft dodger, Vietnam
Bush Jr., Air Force Reserve, Vietnam era stationed in the states.
Even Jimmy served!!!!!! Those Clinton lovers need wo wash their mouths out with Drano.
Altmire never served in the military; he’s got a health care administration background and he’s anti-administration vehemently. First-term congressman who could be vulnerable when re-election time comes around.
Not could be, he is.
The union thugs are already running TV ads for him. Soft campaigning. A long time ahead of schedule, spending big money.
or the Pennysaver!
I suppose things change and the population has expanded so that arranged tours are logistically easier to handle.
I long for the old days and when I toured the WH, President Grant agreed with me.
:O)
No, you could still do that up until 9/11. After the terror attacks, they shut down the White house to all but scheduled tours, and it’s hard to get a tour at all.
I really wish I had gone to the White House when it was open to everybody. I don’t have $50,000 to donate to get a “tour”.
Of course, I wish I had gone to the top of the World Trade Center towers before they were knocked over as well.
Amazing all the things you never do when it’s easy to do.
I think that’s the seat Lynn Swan may run for.
The PAGOP wants Lynn Swann to run for this seat in '08.
Altmire is on the right side of immigration, but man, talk about tax and spend! His whole outlook on life is socialized medicine.
The service workers union is spending mucho bread on tv time. That tells me: “really scared”.
It will be interesting.
