NBC Promotes Toxic Chinese Light Bulbs
AIM ^ | 5 July 2007 | Cliff Kincaid and Andy Selepak

Posted on 07/09/2007 8:24:29 AM PDT by Hal1950

The Alliance for Climate Protection, which is part of Al Gore’s Live Earth campaign, tells people that by using compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs, they can save energy, save money and live longer. But they fail to mention that the bulbs are made in communist China and are potentially hazardous to human health.

Actually, I do use fluorescent bulbs for my outdoor lighting.

They are really efficient and I’m quite happy with them. I have 7 lamps in my yard and each bulb is 15 watts - but puts out the equivalent of an 80 watt bulb. My entire backyard is lit up when I flick the switch - and consumes only as much as a 105 watt incandescent light bulb.

Since the housing for the bulbs is plastic, you cannot really use incandescent bulbs, or you would melt the darned thing... besides the fact that you would use a lot of juice.

My house if full of those compact fluorescent bulbs. Sorry if they’re made in China—I’ve had them for years. The article overdoes the broken bulb dangers, though. (Assuming that bulbs are rarely broken and only one at a time.)

The Half-Hour News Hour did an hysterical skit on this this guy who buys the energy-efficient light bulbs and accidentally breaks one, spewing mercury all over his house and sparking an environmental clean up. It is probably on YouTube.

The fact that ChiComs manufacture a lot of cr@p and unsafe ones at that doesn’t make EVERY product suspect.

Hmmm.... mercury offset credits. Offsets, the business boom of the 21st century.

I’m going to be rich. All the libs will have to buy mercury offset credits from me to cover their CFL disposal problems so they can be mercury neutral.

The only reason NBC News is not at the bottom of the ratings barrel is because CBS has Katie Couric.

But NBC news is the most far left of the major three, right now.

ABC is winning because even though they spew the liberal line, they just don’t do it as much as the other two networks.

They are made in China. The factories making them spew tons of crap into the atmosphere. They have a life expectancy of 9 years. At that time, the land fills in the US will be loaded with Mercury. Get over yourself!

Would the bulbs be any less toxic if they were not made in China?

Make up your minds. You want "green"? or do you just enjoy complaining?

I'm not the one getting hysterical. You don't seem to understand how ridiculous this sounds.

But please, wallow in the Luddite melodrama to your heart's content.

Yes, these bulbs, like ANY fluorescent bulb, requires the use of mercury. Hence, they are hazardous waste when disposed. If everyone switches to these bulbs, we will have a major mercury disposal problem that will be up there with that caused by leaded gasoline. We are looking at a future catastrophy. This isn't fear mongering like Globull Warming(tm). It's a very real, serious issue with these types of bulbs getting into landfills and leaching mercury into groundwater.

I have slowly been changing over to LED bulbs. They use even less and are never hot. Problem is, they are expensive.

Most Americans these days have no problem with the first part but freak out over the second. They forget that communism is hazardous to human life.

Mercury wasn't an "Oh my God!" toxic substance until 1972. Do you realize how many mercury thermometers existed at that time?
Have you heard the personal experiences of people all the way from rocket scientists to the homeless who actually played with the stuff for years when they were young? Count me among them.

Only certain compounds of mercury are soluble. Metallic mercury is not, not so it would matter. How is it that there are no "dead zones" for terrestrial life where cinnabar deposits abound? What's the explanation?

Why haven't these energy bulbs been banned in California? I suppose, though, that if California can designate CO2 a toxic gas by law, anything can be legally declared toxic.

Even common sense.

I have about 100 light bulbs in my house. About 40 have been changed over to CFLs. It has made a huge difference in my electric bill. But LED bulbs will be the wave of the future. They’ll last you a lifetime and use way less energy than even CFLs. My guess is that the big holdup will be no one wants to manufacture them since their replacement interval is measured in decades instead of months for incandescent and years for CFL.

I don’t think it’s “hysterical” to be concerned about these lightbulbs. Yes, people DO break them. Yes, they DO contain mercury, which is a genuinely UNhealthy. There are even worse problems that will take a few years to show up. Research from some years back has already shown that regular use of these bulbs (indoors presumably) lowers immunity.

In my personal experience, I get horrible headaches from them, and if people are at all prone to seizures, the flicker factor can trigger seizures.

I’m surprised that so many people who would normally think for themselves are jumping on the lib bandwagon with these lightbulbs. Save the planet my left foot—this is just another idiotic liberal scam that will ultimately do more harm than good.

No matter WHO makes the vile things.
