The problem with the state notifying someone is that they are accessing information to track you.

Another good point.

I would pefer a private institution attempt to locate me, rather than give the government carte blanche to investigate all my finances on the strength of tracking me down to return neglected assets to me.

1. The last thing you would want, apparently, is for the government to use its power for something nice. 2. They already have said carte blanche in the form of the PATRIOT ACT, the Banking "Secrecy" Act, and a host of other things. Their hands should rightly be tied by Constitutional restraints if they want to investigate criminal activity, but if they are doing you a favor, you want to stop them? Odd.
