Thompson's Political Potential
The Washington Times ^ | David N. Bossie

Posted on 07/08/2007 1:50:41 PM PDT by kellynla

As former U.S. Sen. Fred Thompson gets ready to enter the race for president, observers marvel at how an unannounced candidate, five years out of politics, has managed to climb from nowhere to the top of several national polls.

But the reason for Mr. Thompson's meteoric rise is as plain as day: Man and moment are meeting, as has so regularly occurred in the history of this great nation. When challenges mount, these United States seem to produce the right person for the right job. Fred Thompson is that person, for the challenges that America and the free world face in the years to come.

As more and more mainstream conservative voters recognize that truth, Mr. Thompson's support grows and grows.

First, on substance, Mr. Thompson is the best and most uniquely suited among the Republican candidates for president in 2008 to re-assemble the winning Reagan coalition of social, economic, and foreign-policy conservatives. Why? Because Mr. Thompson marries the right principles, the right core beliefs, with an almost unparalleled ability to communicate those principles in direct and understandable terms. Moreover, Mr. Thompson's record shows the is a legitimate, good-government conservative, with a 35-year record to prove it.

That’s the opinion of nearly 62% of the members of this fine website, a bastion of conservative news and opinions.
Unless they catch Fred in bed with a live boy or a dead girl, he’s the next president of the United States of America. Do you really think that the regular folks in this country will go out in November 2008 in droves to vote for Hillary Clinton?

I do sincerely hope that Thompson is the real deal, but until I hear his actual positions on 1) Illegal immigration, 2) The Iraq war, 3) Taxes and 4) Entitlements of all kinds, I can’t say I support him. I will not vote for another RINO republican. (I’m not saying I he is, just that I have had quite enough of the compassionate kon-servatives, thank you, and won’t accept another)

Right now Fred is a “vaporware” candidate - He is all the things all people may wish him to be. That may be the smart thing to do politically at this point, I guess we’ll see.

And this puzzles me. I mean, do they really think that Hillary can win the Presidency? She may get the nomination which in my opinion would be disaster for the dems. I think they have underestimated the amount of dislike that people have for her.

Maybe I am idealist, but I think a Fred Thompson presidency will unite the entire country.

Only if the moonbats who will be driven to utter despair by a Republican victory actually live up to their threats to leave the country.

I agree with you that they won’t go out to vote for Hillary. However, if Senator Thompson keeps putting homosexuals on the payroll he is going to cause a great many other folks not go out and vote for him either. Which would be a great shame since he really does have potential. However, he had better start paying more attention to detail. Putting an open homosexual on your campaign staff is not a wise move. He will have to, and hopefully will, learn this.

BTW - Soldier to soldier....Everyone thinks their division is the best! Hooah!

As I understand it, the gentleman is only openly homosexual because a left-wing magazine “outed” him. It was not his doing. Other FReepers may be able to assist us with the facts of this case. I am a sinner, as are you, Mr. Thompson and the aforementioned gentleman, so who are we to judge someone, other than politically?

Thats one mans opinion.

I agree with him, so, now that makes two men's opinions.

Indeed I am a sinner, but a repentant one. I don’t care if he was “outed” or not. If he is an actively practicing homosexual, he don’t belong on the staff of a trully conservative candidate. This is not a time for compromize - which is what has got us to a place where homosexuality and hetereosexual promiscuity have so gotten out of control. What one does in private most definitely affects there thinking and public behavior. The personnel you surround yourself with will affect your judgement. Send the fellow packing - there is no shortage of good folks to do the job. I know it is a hard stance, but that is what a leader must be willing to do. If Fred can’t take a hard stance, I don’t want he as commander in chief.
