CA: Dairy critics seek tougher emissions controls

San Joaquin Valley dairies should keep cows in enclosed barns and use special waste collectors to reduce air pollution, say critics of existing dairy air standards.

The Fresno Healthy Dairy Commission, an advocacy group including doctors, business and religious leaders, says dairies cause harmful emissions in Fresno County, which has some of the nation's worst air pollution. The group said Friday a proposed county dairy ordinance needs tougher air quality regulations.

The commission cited recommendations for enclosing dairy barns and cattle waste in a report it requested from the California Institute for Rural Studies, based at the University of California, Davis.

Those standards should be included in a new county dairy and feedlot ordinance being drafted by the county, the group said. A meeting on the proposed ordinance is set for Monday.

The recommendations proposed by the institute would add about three cents to the cost of a gallon of milk, said Lisa Kresge, the study's co-author.

County planner Brian Ross said not all the protections requested by advocates are beneficial, so they shouldn't be required of all dairies. However, Ross said the county could require some dairies to enclose cows and their waste as a requirement of the permitting process.

Fresno County Farm Bureau Executive Director Ryan Jacobsen said advocates' proposals are impractical. For instance, he said, cows couldn't survive the heat in enclosed barns.

The smell eminating out of both houses of Congress is far worse than any dairy farm given the volume of bullshit that is laid down there daily.

Bizarre.

Keep the giant piles of sh*t under roofs...Keeping the cows penned up will further diminish the quality of meat and milk.

When do they pass a law against passing gas? Where does it stop?

This is rather like the Kyoto cr*p. The biggest polluters, like China, South America and all the 3rd world countries would not have to sign on - so are they going to keep their air pollution within their own sky-boundries?

Keep the cows in barns - they going to make the barns air tight, or make the farmers put some 'capture" device on the cows behinds? How they gonna keep the gas from leaving the barn?

Is it my imagination, or is ignorance increasing at an alarming rate in this country?

Just who does this group think they are?

Time for a backyard (barnyard?) FReep. I’m thinking the first annual FreeRepublic chili and bean dip cookoff at FR HQ. And on the back of the t-shirt, “Let ‘er rip!”

No, it is not your imagination; it is simple psychphysics.

It has to do with the Laws of Conservation of Thought.

1.Cogitrons can be neither created nor destroyed; they can only change state;
2.Cogitron density will either expand or contract to fill the available brain space;
3.Cogitrons tend to remain in place, unless an outside force is applied.

We already have our supply, augmented on a per capita basis from the excess freed by both WWII, and the many Leftist.Communist pogroms.

Those now being born have a smaller supply of cogitrons to fill their increased number of brains, resulting in a lower per capita supply, resulting in diminishing intelligence levels.

Disparities between individuals exist, in part due to random motion, akin to Brownian motion in physical particles.

This still leaves some small aberrations that need further study to explain.

One hypothesis posits that some, primarily on D.U. have an abundance of anticogitrons.

Whether they are attracted to DU because of the anticogitrons; or whether they become infested with anticogitrons once the join DU is question that offers an abundance of opportunities for further fruitful research into this overwhelmingly important problem.

It's not your imagination. Ignorance and lack of common sense are both on the rise.

There goes another one dollar to the price of a gallon of milk. Dairy barns are one of the reasons I don’t drink milk. Also chicken barns is another reason I don’t eat chicken.
