I think it has to do with isolating the US. One by one they will try to strip us of our allies and friends. These men are no fools, and they play the propaganda game extremely well. They have basically defeated Bush in Iraq through propaganda alone (with the help of our treasonous press. They simply play into the Vietnam quagmire mindset that the press already had, and the MSM does their job for them, trying to convince the American people that WE are the villains oppressing the poor downtrodden Arabs in order to put money in the pockets of Big Oil.

It frustrates me to no end. I’m just a restauranteur, but the mistakes this administration has made as far as winning the war of words blows my mind. I honestly don’t think I flatter myself to think that I could have done better, and considering my limited abilities, that is sad indeed.

Mine too. It's easy to second-guess the military/administrative errors in Iraq, but that's just hindsight. Bush's lamebrain approach to the "war of words" as you correctly put it, has evoked howls of frustration and protest, on this board and elsewhere, as it has unfolded--as each distortion and lie was allowed to enter the conventional wisdom uncontested.

Anyone wishing to analyze the phenomenon of "Bush-fatigue" could start by reviewing the history of the pathetically impotent handling of the phoney baloney TANG/"Rather-gate affair." FR heroes and bloggers literally saved this bozo's election that time. Then one could follow up with the unspeakably distorted "16 words" SOTU pseudo-controversy. And on. And on.

Bush may have been thinking he would be vindicated by history, but the politics of the present demands a defense and counterattack. For this battle, Bush really has been A-F*ing-WOL.

For some reason, Republicans in office never ever ever ever seem to grasp the fact that the MSM hate their guts and will always hate their guts no matter how nice the Republican is to them, and no matter how brightly the aforementioned MSMers smile during the interview. Republicans in power always seem to suffer from the delusion that they can win the press over and thus get fair reporting. It's amazing.

I think the time for radical action regarding the MSM came a long time ago. 40 years or so. A strong conservative president should announce at his first press conference that he's booting every single one of them out of the White House. Back up his claim of bias with empirical proof and post it online for all to see. Explain to the MSM that all they have to do if they want back in is to REPORT the news in an evenhanded manner. Take them on in crystal clear terms and distribute the heck out of that proof of bias. After all, enough empirical evidence of liberal bias surely exists.
