FDA rebuffs call for aspartame probe

A U.S. consumer group called for an urgent Food and Drug Administration review of the safety of aspartame on Monday, but the FDA said there was no immediate need to do so despite a new study showing the sweetener may cause cancer.  Italian researchers published a new study last week that showed aspartame -- widely used in soft drinks -- might cause leukemia, lymphoma and breast cancer in rats.   "This is the second study by the same lab showing that aspartame causes cancer in rats," Center for Science in the Public Interest executive director Michael Jacobson said in a telephone interview.  Aspartame is used mostly in soft drinks but is also sold in packets to use in coffee, tea or on food. "People can easily avoid products using Nutrasweet or Equal and keep these products away from kids," Jacobson added.

Morando Soffritti of the Ramazzini Foundation in Bologna, Italy, and colleagues tested aspartame in rats, which they allowed to live until they died naturally.  Their study of more than 4,000 rats showed a lifetime of eating high doses of the sweetener raised the likelihood of several types of cancer.  "On the basis of the present findings, we believe that a review of the current regulations governing the use of aspartame cannot be delayed," Soffritti's team wrote in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives, which is published by the U.S. National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences.  "This review is particularly urgent with regard to aspartame-containing beverages, heavily consumed by children."  FDA spokesman Michael Herndon said the agency had not reviewed the study.

"However, the conclusions from this second European Ramazzini Foundation are not consistent with those from the large number of studies on aspartame that have been evaluated by FDA, including 5 previously conducted negative chronic carcinogenicity studies

2 gallons of water a day is quite extreme

Agreed, and the same is true of 2 gals of Coke or Diet Coke, which is the amount that is the equivalent of this studies results. A few tablespoons full of salt/day will also do you in. If you take anything in great excess, it will kill you.

Two other points:
1) My BAD!!
2) I am looking into getting into an Adult Stem Cell study being run out of Miami. Perhaps I can get in touch if I come down there (from Ocala).

I dispute that.

When I was young and fit and very active and worked for UPS, I drank at least 2 gallons of water a day in the summer time. Probably more like 3 or 4 gallons. I may have had a shortage of sodium at times that led to increased sweating, but there was no risk of passing out. I used to sweat so much that my shoes squished when I walked and I left wet footprints everywhere I went.

Just the thought of this much sweetness makes my skin crawl. There was a time when I used to drink Diet Coke whenever I craved soda. One day I stopped, simply couldn’t handle it anymore. To the day I still don’t know what was the reason. I simply cannot look at any diet drink and mind you, I had no side effects (evident ones at least!).

As I stated, the exception to the rule are the people doing outside work. Driving an UPS truck, no a/c is tough...the same working in a warehouse. I would say your job was part of the exception :)

my daughter loves that stuff (she’s 18 - I don’t give MD to little ones!)

I never could get past that unique urine-like color.

If the soda has cherry in it - I’m happy.

I tried to like the recent vanilla - caramel craze....yuck!

I simply cannot look at any diet drink and mind you, I had no side effects

Back when my parents got a blender it came with a recipe for banana milkshakes. I loved bananas, and drank a couple of liters/day. Suddenly I found it revolting and have never had one in the last 50 years. It took me decades to LOOK at a banana again. And there were no side effects at all (except for the 5 inch long hair over my body!!) Perhaps I got too much potassium from the bananas.

Thank you for that info.

I really don’t have much faith in the “organic” marketing ruse either. But, as I said, I really think the ingredients in the food we eat are a prime source of our disease. (Of course, lack of exercise couldn’t be a problem, lol But that isn’t the subject). How organic can meat or vegetables be in the world in which we live? Sadly, we are captives to our diets. Aspertame is a tiny problem.

I really don’t think you would have to go back to the Garden Of Eden for a clean crop. As a kid, we debugged the garden manually, watered the same way. There are too many people that need to be fed to do that today.

cherry cherry cherry!!! yum.

I recently have acquired a need for more caffeine infusion as well.
My new little one is not too cooperative about regular sleeping hours.

In fact - I’m learning why they use sleep deprivation as a form of torture in war.
