And then, on the subject of Africa, there was Chirac’s abandonment of France’s diplomatic and military obligations to the Ivory Coast, with France instead effectively helping the Islamist insurgents to secure their territorial gains, this being pretty obviously done in punishment for the Ivory Coast having allowed non-French companies to bid on, and in some cases win, large contracts.

The scandal, under investigation since 2005, involves forged bank records that suggested falsely that Mr Sarkozy and other senior figures had received big bribes in the sale of French warships to Taiwan.
Gee, Chirac's intended successor involved in something like this? I'm sure it is unrelated to Chirac's drive (abandoned due to political pressure) to resume serious arms sales to Beijing...
