Rep. John Doolittle, a consevative California congressman, today joined others in his party rapidly deserting the president on the Iraq war.
At a town hall meeting in Rocklin and then in a meeting with the editorial board of the Sacramento Bee he questioned whether the conflict was worth the loss of more American lives. He said U.S. troops should be pulled back from the front lines "as soon as possible" and the fighting turned over to Iraqi forces.
A longtime supporter of the war, Doolittle called the situation in Iraq a "quagmire" on Thursday. "We've got to get off the front lines as soon as possible," Doolittle said at Rocklin City Hall, the Bee reported. "And in my mind that means something like the end of the year. We just can't continue to tolerate these kinds of losses."

Amen, brother.
I read an interesting article the other day, can’t seem to find it now, but it was talking about demographics being destiny. Chilling, in that it pointed out that smaller family size (fewer sons) meant considerably less tolerance for societies willing to engage in activity that would risk the loss of those sons. Guess which side is producing 5 or 6 kids per woman?
Given this, our Armed Forces will have to be smarter and more deadly as we progress through the 21st Century. I think at some point the American public may demand that all our potential force (i.e., nuclear) against a conventional opponent.
As George Orwell once said, So much of left-wing thought is a kind of playing with fire by people who don’t even know that fire is hot.
The surge is old school counter-insurgency, and old school counter-insurgency works. Armchair generals who start whining now are going to look pretty silly when Petraeus wins this thing for us...or when Congress takes their cue from you and loses it for us.
And you're not. So sit down and shut the hell up while the rest of us support our fighting men and win this damn thing. Whiners like you have no place calling yourselves conservatives.
One more thing: If you were using your head as something other than a hatrack you'd know that although Joe Lieberman is a lib, people like Domenici and Doolittle couldn't hold his jock on national security issues. He wants to win this thing, and a bunch of crybabies want to lose it--but slowly, don't forget they're good patriots because they want to lose it in early 2008 instead of this month--and you trust them solely because they have an 'R' after their name.
People like you don't deserve to be defended by the guys saving your sorry ass in Iraq right now.
Direct hit!
Reagan had a little something to do with invading Grenada.
More disgusting, self-serving politicians, who apparently never really understood the kind of war we are in.
Bravo! Great post!
I would ask the same thing of you and all the other FR defeatists.
1. Assure (by leaving the battlefield in defeat) that the cost in lives buys us nothing.
2. Declare that a force of 20,000 has beaten a force of 140,000, instead of simply doing what is necessary to defeat the inferior force.
Sounds like a pretty crappy plan to me...and these folks all think they're smarter than Petraeus.
In one paragraph, he said that we should lose this war because it will help us win an election. if that isn't party over country, i don't know what is. In one paragraph, he said that countries with small militaries that harbor, train and fund terrorists aren't a threat to us...just like Afghanistan wasn't.
And yet you cheer him. Tasty pick...
The tactics being used by Petraeus now are the tactics that produced victory in the Phillipines, Malaya, Kenya, Algeria and El Salvador. Old school counter-insurgency works.
The mods should be able to help you on that.
Well, you only have two gaps in your knowledge base. You aparently don't know anything about:
1. What's going on in Iraq.
2. What went on in Vietnam
Other than that, I'm sure you've got a really good bead on things...
While we can't be sure exactly how many casualties it would take to make him week in the knees, we do know how much he'd care about the consequences for the Sudanese population and American honor if we pulled out: Exactly zippo.
That’s a book I’d like to write.
Nice shootin’, gunner!
