Putin secures Sochi victory in vote for 2014 Olympics

GUATEMALA CITY (AP) -- Vladimir Putin pulled off for Russia what Tony Blair did for Britain in the latest Olympic vote. Backed by the Russian president's personal lobbying, charisma and government support, the Black Sea resort of Sochi was elected Wednesday as the host city of the 2014 Winter Games. Sochi defeated the South Korean city of Pyeongchang by four votes in the final round of a secret ballot by the International Olympic Committee, taking the Winter Games to Russia for the first time. The result was a personal triumph for "the captain," who put his international prestige on the line by coming to Guatemala to lobby IOC members and lead Sochi's final formal presentation. "Putin being here was very important," said French IOC member and former ski champion Jean-Claude Killy. "He worked very hard at it. He was nice. He spoke French -- he never speaks French. He spoke English -- he never speaks English. "The Putin charisma can explain four votes."

It just seems so bizarre that this comes out of Guatemala.

I wonder whether the 2014 Sochi Olympics will be boycotted by some countries...

Get your head out of the Cold War.

It’s over.

Maybe you shouldn’t fly on Boeing Deamliners. They have a substantial Russian design-build contribution and Aeroflot bought 22 of them.

Who's talking about the Cold War? Chill out, unlike many Freepers I'm not a devoted "Cold warrior". The idea is there may be some countries that may decide for some reason using some pretext to keep their athlets out. Why not? It's not a big secret that Russia currently has strained relations with Estonia, Ukraine, Poland, Georgia, you may also add well known rigts and liberties abuses, plus Chechnya...

Accounting all this, the boycott concept doesn't seem impossible.

It’s also bizarre that Putin is mentioned as having “charisma.” Who knew?

Just looking at cross-investment in each others’ economies, I’d say you’d be down to an Estonian boycott, if that.

For sure throw Ukraine off the list.

FYI, the US is 7th in the list of investors in the Russian economy. (Voice of Russia number)

As a Calgary '88 bobsled volunteer and living next door to Vancouver-Whistler, I have to say absolutely they do care about the Olympics, yes.

It’s surprising what a little Polonium can do for your personality.

I went down with a track rat in semi-good equipment for the first time in Lake Placid. Among racers, Lake Placid is not noted as being too friendly.

I’d rank the ride right up there with my first solo as a pilot and my only ride in a 200HP/cyl (5-series BMW) race car for thrills.

Clarification: I mean the Lake Placid track is not racer-friendly. The people and the hospitality of Lake Placid would be hard to beat. We'll see what Sochians (if that's what they're called) can overcome the Surly Russian image.

I was thinking it might be kind of neat if they went to an 8-year cycle instead of a 7-year cycle. (I remember when it was 6 years.)

Anyway, I think it was Athens 2004, or maybe Sydney 2000, when they showed the cities vying for the Games 8 years hence. I thought it might have been dramatic if at the closing ceremonies, they said, “join us in X in 4 years, and in Y in 8 years.”
