Whenever I watch the History Channel, you usually get the impression that everyone at that time (WW II era) understood the evil of their day.

To his credit, Lindbergh redeemed himself and shot down at least one (and possibly two) Japanese Zeros from a Lockheed P-38 (unsubstantiated).
