Arizona clamps down on illegals

The governor of the US state of Arizona, Janet Napolitano, has signed into law legislation designed to deter illegal immigrant workers.

The law requires businesses to verify that all their employees are legally entitled to work in the US, or face the prospect of being closed down.

The tougher penalties were introduced days after President Bush's immigration reform bill failed in the Senate.

Arizona is one of the main gateways for illegal migration into the US.

Federal failure

Under the new legislation, an employer's first offence would be punished by a temporary licence suspension.

Congress finds itself incapable of coping with the comprehensive immigration reforms our country needs Janet Napolitano Governor of Arizona

Q&A: US immigration debate US illegal immigrants: Facts A second offence would be punished by what the governor's office called the "business death penalty" - the permanent revocation of a licence to do business in Arizona.

Ms Napolitano said she had acted because she believed Congress in Washington was incapable of tackling immigration reform on a nationwide level.

"Immigration is a federal responsibility, but it is now abundantly clear that Congress finds itself incapable of coping with the comprehensive immigration reforms our country needs", the governor said in a statement.

Arizona has one of the highest illegal immigrant populations in the country.

President Bush's attempt to overhaul US immigration policy collapsed last week when senators voted against a bill.

The proposed legislation set out ways for some of the around 12 million illegal immigrants to seek citizenship.

Ms. Napolitano, it isn't Congress that's the problem. It's the Executive who lack the political will to enforce the law. Enforcement of the law is not Congress' mandate.

Be snippy at the President for this one.

She might have no intention of enforcing the provisions of this law, but she is smart enough to realize that a lot of people will vote for her and her cronies based upon this law having been passed.

Never fear. Illegals will have sanctuary in Arizona’s neighbors, California and New Mexico.

The law only penalizes those who KNOWINGLY hire illegals.

An employer cannot be held responsible for detecting counterfeit ID papers.

So, basically, this law is toothless, except for PR purposes.

If a law punished an employer for hiring illegals regardless of whether he knew they were illegals or not, nobody would ever hire any hispanic, native-born or not; because the penalty for making a mistake would be prison.

The tide is beginning to turn. The citizens of the United States are demanding their country back. Politicians heed the warning. You had better represent and support our demands, not those of illegal invaders.

What more needs to be said? What more do you need to know to see that this country is in huge trouble? If the elected federal government is totally incapable of doing their job on important issues... we are toast.

Too little, too late Janet.

Let Napolitano and Sen McCain explain their activities using tax funds for the Arizona-Mexico Commission, and the Border Infrastructure Project being implemented in collaboration with federal, state and local government agencies........and YOUR tax dollars.

FROM THE ARIZONA-MEXICO COMMISSION WEB SITE http://www.azmc.org/

Welcome to the Arizona-Mexico Commission (AMC) online news and information resource. The Arizona-Mexico Commission is Arizona's premiere cross-border organization. We are a mission-driven non-profit organization chaired by Arizona's governor, Janet Napolitano. Our mission is to improve the economic well being and quality of life for residents of Arizona by promoting a strong, cooperative relationship with Mexico and Latin America through advocacy, trade, networking and information.

Looking for funding? Look no further and check out AMC-ASU’s new funding database: Unlocking the gates to grant sponsorship in Arizona!

"The Border Infrastructure Project database is the single source of information on Arizona’s border infrastructure projects. It tracks each project’s progress along its approval, programming and funding paths and provides the information in a concise and timely way. I hope this is a valuable tool for you and that you will use it often." - Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano

The University of Arizona Office of Economic and Policy Analysis developed the Border Infrastructure Project concept in partnership with the Arizona-Mexico Commission. It is being implemented in collaboration with federal, state and local government agencies. Border communities and stakeholders will be engaged in this project through outreach efforts.

Go Arizona?

This is great news for them. Bad news for the people in the states around them...

We will be getting more and more misery our way since AZ will crack down. Can you really imagine CA doing anything?

At least if all the southern border states were equally pitiful, we could spread some of the illegals..

Oh brother. Can we close the border between AZ and CA? :)

Yeah. How many employers hire Mexican looking folks who speak no English, wear the tell-tale baseball caps and Salvation Army clothing? But they can’t tell.
