The Socialist Left in America was paranoid of the “military industrial complex” but satified that the “Red Scare” was overstated.

Then again Jane Fonda and her ilk were naked communists, PROUD of the Communist movement and swore that we would all love Communism if we only knew what it was.

Yeah, and every once in a while we still hear comments on the Military Industrial Complex. I believe the term was first used by Eisenhower in a very sincere way to advise prudence with so many people dependent on their jobs and profits from government contracts. But my own favorite description for the people who produce the arms, ammunition, and Oder items of war was FDR’s description of them as the “Arsenal of Democracy.” At any rate, the attachment to the Military Industrial Complex was not as severe as Eisenhower feared. Notice how easily Bush I and Clinton cut DOD. Clinton took 10 Divisions from the Army. Rumsfeld still felt the Army was big enough, and few challenged the idea. The American people are content to get their freedom and security as cheaply as possible, and that mitigates against any rational fears that might be realistic about the Military Industrial Complex and government spending or government pursuit of wars for the sake of the Military Industrial Complex.
