Living in Mexico at this time I can tell you that the folks here translate it to mean the "race." If you live in Mexico you might have a different perspective. And one Mexican seeing Kyl on television with the (R) by his name said to me that he "looks like a racist" not knowing Kyl's role in "CIR". So yes, race is the default perspective in Mexico. I know from actual experience. Thanks for the "other" translation.
