Two more held over bomb attacks

A forensic team was at the scene of the Glasgow Airport attack

Detectives investigating the failed car bombings at Glasgow airport and in London have arrested two more people, taking the total number held to seven.

The men, aged 28 and 25, were detained in the Paisley area west of Glasgow on Sunday night. They are not thought to be of British origin.

Police have been given more time to question three people held in London.

It has also emerged that police may have been trying to trace the airport bomb suspects before Saturday's attack.

Detectives are linking the failed bombings, and the UK remains on high alert.

Police said the two latest arrests were as a result of "intensive police operations in the Paisley area".

Locations connected to car bombs inquiry

Police response to attacks

Assistant Chief Constable John Malcolm, of Strathclyde Police, said: "This continues to be a fast-moving investigation and I am grateful to the public for their perseverance and support during these difficult times.

He added: "I would continue to urge people to be vigilant."

Daniel Gardiner, director of a Paisley-based letting agency believed to have rented out a house to one of the suspects, said officers had traced his company after tracking phone records linked to the foiled London car bomb attacks.

"The police wanted to know why we had dialled a certain phone number. They had the phone records from the situation down in London," he said.

Severe burns

Dr Mohammed Asha, 26, who worked as a junior doctor at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital and the Princess Royal Hospital in Telford, and a 27-year-old woman believed to be his wife, were both arrested on the M6 in Cheshire on Saturday night.

On Monday, Staffordshire Police began searching a property in Priam Close, in Bradwell, two miles from Chesterton, where Dr Asha lived.

Another 26-year-old man was arrested in Liverpool on Sunday.

Warrants have been issued which allow police to further detain the three people, who are being held at Paddington Green police station, until Saturday.

Two men were also detained at Glasgow airport on Saturday after the attempted attack.

One had severe burns and remains in a critical condition, and under armed police guard, at Royal Alexandra Hospital, in Paisley.

The first five people arrested are believed to be of Middle Eastern nationalities.

Extra delays

The terror alert level was raised to critical - its highest level - after a Jeep Cherokee, loaded with gas cylinders, crashed into the doors of Glasgow airport's main terminal and burst into flames on Saturday afternoon.

Detectives are trying to trace the movements of the green vehicle - registration L808 RDT - which crashed into the airport.

The attempted attack in Paisley came a day after two Mercedes containing petrol, gas cylinders and nails were found outside a nightclub in London's Haymarket and in a nearby street.

The devices failed to detonate.

In other developments:

  • Commuters and air travellers were being warned to expect extra delays to journeys, with extra police patrols and vehicle searches taking place at airports and transport hubs

  • The prime minister will hold meetings with Scottish Secretary Des Browne, Transport Secretary Ruth Kelly and MPs affected by the attack on Glasgow airport

  • Gordon Brown's official spokesman dismissed suggestions the attacks were linked to either Mr Brown taking over as prime minister or his Scottish origins, saying: "These attacks could have happened any time, anywhere in the country."

  • Alex Salmond, Scotland's First Minister, said life was already getting back to normal in Scotland

  • The United States has increased security at airports, with extra US air marshals on flights to Britain

  • Houses have also been searched in Houston, near Paisley, and in Merseyside

Progress

Home Secretary Jacqui Smith defended the decision not to raise the terror alert level to critical earlier in the light of suggestions that the new Brown administration could be a target.

She told the BBC that decisions on the level of alert were taken by an independent committee, which properly raised the level to critical after attempted bombings.

She said the government had put sufficient focus on counter-terrorism and was looking at ways of "tackling the ideology that recruits people to terrorism" and at further legislation.

Ms Smith, who will make a statement to MPs in the Commons on Monday afternoon, also said she was encouraged by the progress of the police investigation into the attacks.

Earlier, Ms Smith had declined to comment on reports that US Intelligence had recently warned the UK that Glasgow could be a target.

Police have urged anyone with information to phone the confidential Anti-Terrorism hotline number on 0800789321.

They were going to, but no one had a duck or large scales handy. They couldn’t be sure that it would be legal.

“a junior doctor “

Reminds me of an old comedy routine.

Q: I understand you are a surgeon.
A: Yes, I do.
Q: Uh, I mean, you do surgery.
A: Yes, I am.
Q: Well whatever. What sort of surgeon are you?
A: I am a brain surgeon.
Q: [Alarmed] Brain surgeon?
A: Cool it man! I ain’t got no license!
Q: I can’t imagine you get much business. How do you earn a living?
A: I play trumpet in Chicago for Jimmy Lunsford’s band.
Q: Jimmy Lunsford’s dead.
A: Maybe it’s Detroit...
Q: I told you, Jimmy Lunsford’s dead!
A: There, too?
Q: There, too.
A: Dang. Guess I’ll have to quit hitting that cat up for a raise!

There were conflicting news reports, that the car hung up on a bollard, or on a traffic sign.

I don’t see any bollards. If that was New York, there’s be a row of them along the curb, anywhere where you could drive a van or a truck into the building.

Also, there are conflicting reports whether or not the US warned British intelligence that an attack on Glasgow Airport was iminent. In this article, the government refuses to clarify the issue, and Norman Brown goes out of his way to deny that the attack has anything to do with his becoming Prime Minister.

Looks to me like a pattern of ducking and dodging. I suppose that’s what politicians do, but it’s disturbing that a warning was probably given yet there was no barrier in front of the entrance, not even a temporary one.

I wonder if people of any significance in the "terrorist community" are feeling humiliated by this inept attempt and will be incited to quickly strike again, redoubling, perhaps, their viciousness.

(It really is hard to get inside their heads. Almost all of us can think of so many, simple means of wreaking havoc, but they have these elaborate networks and plan for months...years even. Makes sense on a 9/11 operation, but any angry numnut can bomb a crowd of people or do dozens of other easy things to unleash fear and social chaos. Any angry numnut except these particular morons, it seems.)

I disagree - he’d probably already be dead. Burn injuries are horribly painful - he’s probably singing like a little birdie (or else they just might forget when he’s due for another shot of morphine; wouldn’t that be a shame!).

.....Dr Mohammed Asha.....

I was sure that the names of the perpetrators would NOT be Sven, Vojislav, Vladimir, Peter, Edmund, or Israel.

Try Mohammed, Abdullah, Mahmoud, Ibrihim, Osama, etc., etc., etc.

Now explain to me why our politicians of both parties, and at all levels of goverment from the municipal to the national—as well as Euro politicians—are so eager to appease the “Religion of Peace”. Appeasement only brings more terrorism and more subversion, and will lead to islamic world domination!!!!

Fascinating Analysis of Leftist Goals, August 13, 2006

Reviewer: N. Sincerity - See all my reviews

A former 1960s radical, Horowitz is well-acquainted with the Leftist mindset. In this book, he strives to explain the modern alliance between left wing progressivists and radical Islamofascists. He argues that this alliance is based on a common desire to destroy Western capitalism. Leftist sympathy with Islamofascist ideas makes no sense from an intellectual point of view, given that countries ruled by radical Islamists are among the most racist, sexist, theocratic states in the world today. However, Leftists have recognized that they can benefit politically from destructive terrorist attacks on the Western world. A West under attack can be made to turn on its leaders in fear and desperation (as they did in Spain after the Madrid train bombings). Only once people reject current government structures can the Left execute its anti-capitalist revolution and build a new reality that mirrors the Leftist view of utopia.

The complete and utter idealogical hypocrisy of the Islamofascist-Leftist alliance is distressing, but as Horowitz reminds us,

Leftists radicals truly believe the ends justify the means.

“arrested two more people,”
wrong. They weren’t people who were arrested. What they are is unknown, but they are not of the species “homo sapiens”.
