A second bomb to target rescuers is an old IRA trick. It was also used by Eric Robert Rudolph in two of his four bomb attacks (the Sandy Springs clinic and the Other Side lounge). The IRA also used to phone in a bomb threat, wait for an evacuation, and then set off the bomb(s) they'd set along the evacuation route.
The nails are used by pretty much every terrorist group. Packing a bomb with anti-personnel shrapnel is not a new idea. Even the US military uses the principle in the form of the ball bearings in Claymore mines.
I wouldn't read too much into who used what tactic when. Terrorists learn from each other. They have internet access just like the rest of us. Whoever planned this was standing on the shoulders of every bomber before, whether they ever met or not.
Interesting, that is the MO of Palestinians, both in the make and the second bomb for rescuers.
It seems the new State of Gaza is in the export business.

Yes, I lived in Northern for 3 yrs and was there when this all happened. I had planned to be at Narrow Water early that evening for some photo shoots but was delayed. All hell had already broken loose when I headed down the dual carriage way out of Newry to Warrenpoint. Police stopped me and when they heard my American accent told me what had happened. I knew earlier that day about Lord Mountbatten and his family being blown up in the blast from the bomb on his boat.
I had been by Narrow Water several times that weekend and had seen the lorry load of hay parked there. I called a number that the police put out for any info regarding the matter, and they sent a plainclothes officer to my home to interview me about what I had seen.
You always hit the nail square on the head.
The fact that you do so with such good humor is a bonus.
