“FBI calls Chinese espionage ‘substantial’”
By Bill Gertz
July 27, 2007

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “FBI Director Robert S. Mueller III said yesterday that Chinese intelligence operations against the United States are a major problem and that the FBI is stepping up counterespionage efforts against them.

Mr. Mueller was asked during a House Judiciary Committee hearing about growing Chinese espionage activities.

“There is substantial concern,” Mr. Mueller said. “China is stealing our secrets in an effort to leap ahead in terms of its military technology, but also the economic capability of China. It is a substantial threat that we are addressing in the sense of building our program to address this threat.”

He declined to elaborate but said he would be willing to disclose more in a closed-door meeting.”

“Debate in Salafi Islam over Jihad Against ‘Heretical’ Arab Regimes”

SNIPPET: “On July 16, 2007, Sheikh Abu Basir Al-Tartusi [1] responded on his website (www.abubaseer.bizland.com ) to a claim made by Sheikh Hamed Al-Ali [2] on his own website (www.h-alali.info/index.php ) that jihad against the Arab regimes is doomed to failure while jihad against foreign forces occupying Muslim lands is destined to succeed. Tartusi warned that this claim could be exploited by various elements to discourage the Muslims from launching jihad against the regimes that oppress them. He added that Islam commands the Muslims to wage jihad against any Muslim leader who has “become completely heretical,” and that disobeying this command can only bring greater oppression and suffering to the Muslims.

Sheikh Tartusi’s website is hosted by Performance Systems International Inc., based in WashingtonDC.

Sheikh Al-Ali’s website is hosted by FortressITX, based in New Jersey.

Following are excerpts from Tartusi’s response:”

50-year-old Indian Christian stoned and beaten to death in Kerala

By Michael Ireland
Chief Correspondent, ASSIST News Service

KERALA, INDIA (ANS) — An argument over a stray cow led to the beating death of a middle-aged Christian believer in Kerala, India.

According to a report from the Salem Voice Ministries News Service, a group of seven Hindu youth forcibly entered a Christian house and killed the houseowner on July 23 at Helibriya, near Elappara in the Highrange District called Idukki of Kerala state in India.

Paulraj was beaten to death following an argument over a stray cow.
It all started when a few days ago Paulraj’s cow entered Raju’s cultivated land. Raju became angry and cruelly beat the cow. There followed a quarrel going between the two men.

In connection with this incident, Prince, the younger son of Paulraj and Soman and the son of Raju had a fight on Monday evening. Suddenly Raju gathered a group of men and they entered the house of Paulraj to kill him.

Paulraj tried to escape when the attackers came to the house, but they stoned him as he was falling fallen down. Then the attackers beat him to death with steel pipes and sticks. Prakash, the elder son of Paulraj told Salem Voice Ministries (SVM) News Service.

Maria Selvi, wife of Paulraj was also severely beaten by the suspected attackers.

The dead body of Paulraj was sent to Kottayam Medical College for the post mortem.

“Raju is a fanatic and gathers Hindu youths to give training against Christians,” says a local Christian, who was afraid to give his name.

P.K.G. Simon, the Deputy Superintendent of Police of Kattappana, is investigating the case. Raju, Balan, Anil Kumar, Pal, Sibin, Soman and Anish were arrested.

Rev. Paul Ciniraj, the President of the Christian Ministers of the Churches of India (CMCI) and Director of Salem Voice Ministries, condemned the incident. He visited the victim’s house and prayed for the family members that they may be sealed by the precious blood of Jesus Christ for a mighty protection. He acknowledged the quick police action in arresting the suspects.

Coalition Forces Detain Four Suspected Special Groups Terrorists

BAGHDAD, Iraq – Coalition Forces captured four suspected Special Groups terrorists affiliated with the Iranian lethal aide network in a pre-dawn raid Friday in the village of Qasarin, Diyala Province.

Coalition Forces conducted a raid to capture or kill a highly-sought operative believed to be a senior leader of a weapons smuggling network. The captured terrorists are suspected of facilitating the transport of weapons and personnel from Iran into Iraq. The captured terrorists are also believed to have facilitated the flow of deadly Explosively Formed Projectiles (EFPs) into Iraq from Iran to be used against Coalition Forces.

“Coalition troops remain relentless in our pursuit of those terrorists who seek to bring EFPs and other lethal aid into Iraq,” said Major Marc Young, MNF-I spokesperson. “Iranian influence is hindering the prospects of peace and stability in Iraq.”

Was unable to respond earlier this week to new RUMINT regarding Syria’s plans to conduct its next war with Israel using SCUDs. The basis was the Syrian recognition that Israel cannot sustain a war of attrition. This is an accurate observation and has been evidenced historically.

The Yon Kippor war was designed from the start to neutralize the Israeli blitzkreig ability displayed in the 1948 and 1967 wars. The Egyptian army dug into defendable ground with a new weapon - the Sagger anti-tank missile. This resulted in heavy Israeli losses. The second innovation was the extensive Soviet supplied air defense network. This negated the Israeli airforce’s ability to be a force multiplier. The controlled the air - no arab airforce could challenge them, but they could not effectively support the ground forces. Eventually, the Israelis were able to force a gap in the air defense umbrella and support the ground forces counter attack. This threw the arab plans off and forced them to play Israel’s game on the ground. However, because of the heavy losses and the seemingly inability to push the arab armies back, Israel was getting ready to push the nuclear button as it appeared that its survival was in jeopardy.

The PA intafada was the second war of attrition. This eventually forced Israel to concede the Clinton era agreements to trade land for peace. While it is clear that this was (and still is) a foolish plan (illustrated by the withdrawal from Gaza), they did respond with the wall, which has significantly reduced terror attacks from the west bank onto Israel proper.

The final instance was the botched Lebanon campaign of last year. Again, dug in Hezobolla fighters with anti-armor missiles combined with short to intermediate range rockets wore a limp wristed Israeli prime minister into the ground. His decisions sent Israeli troops into a meat grinder without adequate support. Clearly, Israel lost that war as they failed to remove Hezbollah and the threat continues.

With the history behind us, what would a future war waged by ballistic rockets pan out. First off, Syria would likely do this in conjunction with Hezbolla in the north and Hamas in Gaza - a three front war. The PA in the west bank currently does not have the rocket assets the other two do. The arab/islamic attacks would clearly be against civilian targets. Here Syria would have to walk a thin line. Israel has more than enough capability to level Damascus and would likely retaliate against Syrian civilian targets. At this stage it is unlikely that Israel would use the nuclear option, since their missile shield would provide some defense and its ground and air forces would remain relatively intact to prevent ground operations. I suspect that Syria would not initiate ground assaults against the Golan as they would be fighting on Israel’s terms. I suspect that they would maintain an aggressive defensive posture to prevent Israeli groundforces from pushing to Damascus, thus forcing the Israelies to fight on their terms. I think Israeli ground attacks would focus on Gaza first then Lebanon (allowing the international community to support them as last year).

I think that Israel will recognize the attempt at attrition and move to end the war more quickly, with massive strikes against Syria. Here is where Syria’s big mistake could come -using chemical weapons. They’ve got them and although the anti missile defense system of Israel may be good, some may likely get through. If so, Israel may counter strike with nuclear weapons, both Syria governmental sites as well as Syrian missile facilities (if the launch site and equipment are glowing, they are denied as Desert Storm/Shield proved, it hard to find mobile launchers). At this stage, Iran may join in with its long range assets. If it does, then the genie is out of the bottle and all those B2’s being retrofitted will be busy over Tehran.

How probable is this scenario? I don’t really know, depends if Assad thinks he can pull it off and has enough assurance of support from Iran. However, with three carrier groups in the area, the US may jump in quickly on the Israeli side against Syria. My best guess is that for now, it would start between Hezbollah/Hamas once Hamas is equipped in the same fashion as the Hez. This would be safer for Syria. If things go bad, or as Israel starts hitting supply lines from Syria, they could say Israel started it and launch. So a lot will also depend upon the Israeli response and success against Hezbollah and Hamas. If they can wear the forces down, Syria may think Israel is weak enough to risk such an escalation of the war and win.

Big time gamble, big time stakes. I only hold my breath and pray.

Feds Determining If Accused Rapist Had Poison
WBNS 10 TV ^ | July 27 2007

Posted on 07/27/2007 10:38:49 AM PDT by flutters

PATASKALA, Ohio - Federal agents searching the home of an accused rapist on Friday were working to determine whether he was intending to make the lethal poison ricin.

On Thursday, authorities converged on the Mink Street home to arrest Stanley Elliott on charges including rape and gross sexual imposition, 10TV’s Laura Cole reported.

SLIDESHOW: Images From Scene

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and the state fire marshal were called to the home at about 5 p.m. after there were reports of chemicals inside. A hazardous materials crew erected a decontamination tent and put on protective suits, Cole reported.

It appeared that castor beans were discovered inside the home. Ricin, considered a weapon of mass destruction, can be made from the waste left over from processing castor beans.

Authorities said that they had credible intelligence that Elliott, 63, was in the process of making ricin, Cole reported.

Chemicals removed from the scene were taken away for testing, Cole reported.

Ricin can be in the form of a powder, a mist or a pellet or it can be dissolved in water of food. It has some potential medical uses, including being used in bone marrow transplants and treating cancer. As little as 500 micrograms of ricin, which would fit onto the head of a pin, could be enough to kill an adult, 10TV News reported.

Elliott remained in the Licking County Jail on Friday, Cole reported.

“Somali-Canadians joined fight in Horn of Africa: report”
Stewart Bell, National Post
Published: Wednesday, July 25, 2007

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “An al-Qaeda-backed militant group fighting in Somalia is made up partly of Canadians, says a declassified intelligence report that warns while some of the insurgents may be dead, others could attempt to return to Canada.
The report by the government’s Integrated Threat Assessment Centre confirms reports that members of Canada’s large ethnic Somali community have traveled to the Horn of Africa to join the Taliban-like Council of Islamic Courts.

“Some Somali-Canadians have fought as Islamist extremists in Somalia,” says the report, Somali-Canadian Islamic Militants. It is marked “Secret” but was released under the Access to Information Act, although portions were removed for national security reasons.

The report says the Canadian government does not know how many Canadians are in Somalia; only 28 have registered with the Department of Foreign Affairs, but the actual number is estimated at somewhere between 1,000 and 5,000.”
