UNION BIG OPENS 'FIRE' ON GIULIANI; BRAVEST BOSS: 'WE'LL GO AFTER HIM' IN '08
NY POST ^ | July 1, 2007 | GINGER ADAMS OTIS

Posted on 07/01/2007 10:23:37 AM PDT by Liz

Calling Rudy Giuliani unqualified to lead, the city's firefighter union is vowing to try to torpedo the former mayor's bid for the presidency. Uniformed Firefighters Association president Steve Cassidy told The Post that if the Republican front-runner starts to get "real traction, we will go after him."

NYC firefighters going after Rudi is really bad news for one reason: Rudi desperately needs to keep his self-made 9/11 legacy intact b/c he has ingrained in the public's mind that 9/11 is his one and only reason for getting elected president.

FReeper George W. Bush best summed up the fallacy of Rudi's 9/11 legacy (when Giuliani slammed Clinton over terrorism last week):

"A bit of Rudi's legerdemain. He attempts to distract attention from increasing scrutiny of his own failures as mayor, (a) to update communications equipment, and, against the advice of all his senior advisors, (b) to place his emergency command center and its huge diesel fuel supply right in the Twin Towers, already a known high-propaganda target of terrorists.

The real objective of his attack is to distract from EPA's Whitman telling Congress and the press that she warned Rudi to get his rescue workers into respirators in the first few days after 9/11.

That is what this little Xlinton attack is about. (A) Xlinton didn't make him put that command center in WTC. (B) Xlinton didn't stop him from updating the emergency radio system which contributed to inadequate 9/11 response despite the heroism of rescuers. (C) Xlinton didn't make him turn New York City into a sanctuary city where terrorist elements could live without fear of deportation. (D) And Xlinton certainly didn't keep him from outfitting his rescue workers with respirators."

"Rudy is about to be 'Swiftboated'."

Is it a rank and file movement or run by the union bosses? If they let go with both barrels and kill his primary bid, he's been "Swiftboated." If they wait to see if he gets the nomination, then it's just the union bosses doing Hillary's bidding.

If Big Labor hates Rudy, that’s a huge plus for him in my book. I think most write off Big Labor as a bunch of thugs anyway, no matter what the union is.

New York City firefighters aren't going after Rudy -- the union is -- there's a difference.

All Rudy did was make a speech. WOOOPEEE. His WOT effort was to push Kerik to head homeland security. Decisions like that coupled with his multiple spouse missteps, casts his judgment in the pits. Bloomberg does a better job as Mayor.

The objective for conservatives is to make sure Rooty the liberal is not the GOP nominee.

If the unions want to help take him down, so be it. Conservatives should be happy for the helping hand. I'm satisfied.

I would only support Rudy against Hillary. But Steve Cassidy is trying to remake history for his own personal benefit. At gatherings after 9/11 Rudy was cheered by the NYC firemen.I have films of Hillary being booed mercilously by the same firemen.Steve Cassidy is open to the highest bidder.

Wow! AP, NY Times etc. anti- Giuliani articles are often quoted. Now union anti-Guiliani retoric is the voice of God on FR.
I’m seeing more vitriol against Giuliani on FR than I ever remember even Kerry receiving in 04.

The public doesn’t understand the ins and outs of these things. This union will get huge publicity. Everyone in the country will know about it before they’re done. If Rudy’s the nominee, it will cost him 3 to 5 points among voters.

These people are more concerned about their egos than their country. To fail to see that Rudy, despite his failings, is much better than any Rat is beyond stupidity. It’s narcissism.

To belong to the NYC firefighters’ union, you have to be a NYC firefighter.

Besides, they probably all have to join the union (or are mandated to pay dues) as a condition for employment.

Possible reasons: 1) didn't look at FR much in 04, 2) bad memory, 3) poor eyesight, or 4) you're posting myths.

I agree... I have no idea where Cassidy is coming from. IIRC Rudy went to as many firefighter funerals after 9/11 as he could, and he made it a point to say that given the number of funerals there just weren’t enough “brothers” go cover them all in the way they always do.

I’m not a Rudy supporter (as another poster pointed out, I’d only vote for him if the other choice was hillery-rotten or any RAT), but I don’t understand the vitriol against him here on FR. At least for a time the shamnesty-bill replaced the omnipresent “in his own words” tag. That was welcome.

As of today, there are only two people in Hillary’s way of becoming president, Rudy and McCain. No other Republican is within 15 points of her. And, I don’t think time or the times are being kind to McCain.

The attempt to swiftboat Rudy may back-fire big-time. I, for one, think Christy Whitman will go to the wall for the guy (so, invoking her name against Rudy is a bad idea). And I also think the president of the NYC firemen’s union may have a whole lotta ‘splaining to do, to the rank and file.

Having said that, there are two unions that are rock solid in the Democrat camp, the teachers union and the state and municipal workers union. The old idea that Republicans can get the uniformed police and firefighters vote is eroding.

Anybody who is confused about what elections are about in the United States is simply naive. It is about the future of freedom for us and, perhaps, for the world. (I say “perhaps” because there is a small but growing number of countries we can migrate to, when the U.S. goes down the tubes.)

Those of you who don’t like RINOS, get ready for the President, Congress, Supreme Court and almost all of the state governments of this country to be in the hands of “the real-deal” Democrats. Say hello to tax inrceases, socialized medicine, same-sex marriage, quotas and set-asides, and a foreign policy based on accomodating the dictators of the world.

Let’s see ... Write off the moderates, disrespect the libertarians, alienate the Hispanics, have Americans die for a country that won’t or can’t fight for itself, and postpone indefinitely any other agenda (e.g., S.S. reform, replacing the income tax, or school vouchers). Brilliant!!!

You have got to be kidding. I guess no one remembers what NYC was when Rudy got in the mayors office.

FReepers have exposed Rooty Toot for what he is --- a phony Republican and a fraud on conservative issues.

Giuliani is a life long supporter of liberal causes and liberal issues. He will not be the GOP nominee.
