Not sure if American law enforcement approach things differently to ours here, but a controlled explosion of a potential threat is not at all unusual, especially at times of high alert. I was in a traffic jam approaching the Severn Bridge last week while the motorway was closed whle police blew up a suspcious package.
This is nothing new, I remember getting into conversation with some rather distraught American tourists at Victoria Station about 20 years ago who, straight from the plane at Heathrow, had left their cases and went off to get something to eat. By the time they returned their luggage had been exploded.
There alway is. Life does not exist in transparancy. I truly wish life did though (exist in transparancy), victory would be much easier.

i visited israel in 1998 and was at the western wall... someone had left a bag laying around.. they cleared the area by so-many yards and then a sniper from one of the roof-tops destroyed the bag from a distance.
