Hancock wrote Fitz Lee after the war and said that the hill could have been taken up until late afternoon since he did not arrive on the field until 3:00 and it took a while for him to establish the line. Once the line was established... no it could not have been.
The Southerns were not the only ones who were worn out. The North was too.

True but it’s better to be worn out holding good ground than having to attack it.

Everything’s easy in hindsight. Ewell didn’t have a clue that there weren’t another two Yankee divisions up by then. Again, this presupposes the other “what if,” that Reynolds isn’t killed early on July 1, in which case, under his leadership, it’s entirely possible there wouldn’t be many Rebels to take the hill in the first place.
