That's the question Bobby Schindler asked in the case involving Jesse Ramirez, the Arizona man whose case paralleled that of Schindler's sister, Terri Schiavo, until Ramirez woke up. The Arizona Republic reports:

...Bobby Schindler of the Florida-based Terri Schindler Shiavo Foundation placed the blame on a medical establishment quick to dismiss patients with brain injuries.

Schindler is the brother of Terri Schiavo, a brain-damaged Florida woman who died in 2005 after a decades-long court battle.

"What is the rush?" he asked. "This is not the first time we've heard of cases like this where doctors want to write off the chance of recovery, and the family, when they're told this, will make a decision to end a person's life.

"In the case of Mr. Ramirez, he'd be dead now."

Why is Jesse alive? His family sought legal intervention with the help of the Alliance Defense Fund:

His siblings and parents refused to give him up for dead, and today, Jesse Ramirez is alive and conscious.

Two weeks ago, he was the center of a family battling over of whether he should live or die.

Now, he can hug and kiss, nod his head, answer yes and no questions, give a thumbs-up sign and sit in a chair.

Interesting, isn't it?, for a man who has never been able to hold a job. Remember how he used to boast to the nurses, "I'm going to be rich!" Translation: "As soon as that b*tch dies, I'm going to get a lot of money out of it." Some "loving husband" he was!

The fine does hurt his image, though. It makes him out to be a lawbreaker and political cheat in the public eye. Fraud and murder couldn't do that but this can.

Be on the lookout for an expose’ on the Bush family role in Terri’s untimely passing. There was a woman at the vigils who said they were luciferians. I don’t believe that but they are definitely not pro-life. Bush protects frozen embryos but all kinds of illegal euthanasia goes on every day. The Bushes are not pro-life. They are faux-life.

I don't recall seeing such a term, fv. Strange to say, most strangulations leave either no external marks, or marks so faint that even ERs commonly miss them. When the trolls gloat that no external marks were found, they aren't really making a point -- that's the NORMAL status in strangulation.

You may be recalling the chokehold that Michael and his brothers used in roughhousing. (As I recall, Michael did it to Bobby once, too.) It has a lot of names such as blood choke or carotid sleeper hold or shime waza in judo. It works by cutting off oxygen to the brain by compressing the carotid artery. This can cause unconsciousness in TEN SECONDS! With enough force, the hold can also crush air passages (= choking). Either way the victim will quickly pass out for lack of oxygen.

SPRINGFIELD - Hampden Superior Court Judge C. Jeffrey Kinder said yesterday he wants to resolve as many disputes as possible between the prosecution and defense in the child-abuse case against Jason D. Strickland before a jury is picked for the trial, which may begin on Sept. 4.

The case has been assigned to Kinder, and a pretrial conference was held yesterday. Kinder tentatively set a hearing for Wednesday, which will be held if defense lawyer Greg T. Schubert is free from trial obligations in another county.

Haleigh Poutre, Strickland's stepdaughter, was left hospitalized with a brain injury on Sept. 11, 2005. Haleigh, now 13, is in a Boston rehabilitation hospital. Her case gained national media attention and has triggered a continuing debate in Massachusetts about how the state handles child welfare responsibilities.

Strickland and his wife, Haleigh's adopted mother Holli A. Strickland, both of Westfield, were arrested and charged with assault after the girl was hospitalized.

Holli Strickland died later that month in what West Springfield police said appeared to be a murder-suicide at the hands of her grandmother.

News that Dr. Jack Kevorkian plans to visit the University of Florida is already making waves among critics of euthanasia.

Bobby Schindler, brother of the late Terri Schiavo, is leading a petition drive to persuade UF to rescind its offer to Kevorkian.

UF's student-run speakers bureau, Accent, has offered Kevorkian $50,000 to speak at the university. Kevorkian, an advocate of physician-assisted suicide, has accepted the offer, according to his attorney. No contract has been signed, however, according to UF officials.

Schindler heads a nonprofit group called the Terri Schiavo Foundation, named for his sister who died of dehydration in 2005 after being removed from her feeding tube.

The Schiavo foundation aims to "help others avoid tragedies that reflect what Terri endured," according to its Web site.

"In the case of Dr. Kevorkian (as a speaker at UF), he's a convicted murderer," Schindler told The Sun on Wednesday. "He's a man that is obsessed with death."

"I think the message he's sending to our young kids is dangerous," Schindler added.

Along with his parents and siblings, Schindler argued that his sister should have been kept on a feeding tube after a collapse that doctors said left her in a persistent vegetative state. But Michael Schiavo, Schiavo's husband and legal guardian, successfully argued that she would have wanted the tube removed.

The Schiavo case drew national news media attention, prompting attempted intervention from lawmakers, Gov. Jeb Bush and members of the U.S. Congress.

Beth Waltrip, director of student activities at UF, said Accent is interested in hosting Kevorkian because he will stimulate important discussion on campus.

"I can appreciate that Terri Schiavo's brother and others may not agree with his position, and that's appropriate," she said. "As a university, we're trying to encourage that type of dialogue and exchange of information."

"As a general philosophy from the university, we may or may not agree with the position (taken by a speaker) but we don't want to suppress the conversation about it. We're not going to suppress it because it may be a thorny position."

One can't help but wonder if perhaps the mainstream media are feeling a growing sense of uneasiness regarding Terri Schiavo's death.

In the two years since my sister died, I have witnessed an increasing determination on their part to convince the public that she was "hopeless" and in a persistent vegetative state (PVS).

I believe this is happening because of the increasing number of questions being raised as to the veracity of the PVS diagnosis, which was the litmus test used to kill Terri - a litmus test still being used to justify the killing of others who are said to be in this condition.

Just last month, researchers found that over 40 percent of the people diagnosed as being in a PVS are misdiagnosed. This new study confirmed an already existing British study regarding the high rate of PVS misdiagnoses.

In addition, scientists are developing new technology that takes better images of brain function. Much to the surprise of researchers, some of these images taken on people that were thought to be oblivious to their surroundings show that they have some level of consciousness.

There have also been well-publicized cases of people diagnosed as being in "vegetative" conditions, predicted by doctors to never to regain consciousness, who have unexplainably awakened.

Some regained awareness after being in a PVS or similar condition far longer than Terri was. Terry Wallis regained awareness after 19 years, Sarah Scantlin after 20 years, and Patricia White Bull after 16 years.

And then you have recent stories like that of Jesse Ramirez, 36, whose feeding tube was removed by his wife only 10 days after he suffered a severe head trauma in an automobile accident, when doctors said that he would most likely end up "vegetative." His parents questioned the doctors and were able to get a judge to have his feeding tube reinserted. Days later, Jesse began to make noticeable improvement, and he is now interacting with family and friends and scheduled for rehab.

What's common to such stories is the fact that the mainstream media report them with the oft-repeated, almost frantic disclaimer that "of course this should not be confused with Terri Schiavo's case."

Just a couple of weeks ago, regarding Jesse Ramirez, ABC News made certain to separate his situation from Terri's. "But ethicists debate the extent to which this comparison is valid. This guy was not hopeless and in a persistent vegetative state by any means."

Here is a USA Today story from June 2005: "The cases of Wallis and Schiavo are different biologically. Both slipped into comas when their brains were first injured, but then they diverged. Schiavo remained vegetative while Wallis moved into a state of limbo."

And a Washington Post article from September 2006: "But Owen, Schiff and others stressed that the research does not indicate that many patients in vegetative states are necessarily aware or likely to recover. Schiavo, in particular, had suffered much more massive brain damage for far longer than the patient in Britain, making awareness or recovery impossible, they said."

Why do the media goes to such extravagant lengths to distance Terri's case from anything that might connect her to a positive development or outcome? Perhaps it is because they realize just how culpable they are in her death.

The media championed the cause of the so-called "right to die" movement and wrote Terri off as "hopeless" from the beginning. By trumpeting the decision of the judge who sentenced her to die, handling with kid gloves the husband who sought to kill her and giving a platform to euthanasia advocates, the media abdicated all responsibility to present the truth to the American public.

Dr. Jon Thogmartin, who performed Terri's autopsy clearly stated, on at least three separate occasions, that he was unable to conclude whether Terri was in a PVS because it is a clinical diagnosis (the person must be alive) and cannot be confirmed by autopsy.

Regardless, Greer's decision and that of the doctors with whom he sided will never be challenged. This is because no one can admit that a mistake was made and an innocent, conscious, disabled woman was wrongly dehydrated to death.

Sadly, the death movement has many years and millions of dollars invested in manipulating our culture and wooing the media into accepting this "quality of life" standard that uses the PVS diagnosis as a reason to terminate life.

Admitting Terri was conscious would be potentially devastating to their cause. They cannot and will not allow this to happen - thus the constant repetition that, no matter how obvious the evidence may be to the contrary, "we should not confuse" any of these findings "with the Terri Schiavo case."

In fact, I expect the media to become even more resolute in trying to justify Terri's death, regardless that it is becoming clearer that not only was Terri's condition misdiagnosed, but that the PVS finding is a sham and should be abolished. n

PMSNBC chimes in with a weighty dilemma from its perspective. I know I shouldn't but the word, "struggle" always associates in my mind with raw communism. The media just can't let go, proving what Bobby says with their repeats of old lies...

WASHINGTON - A terminal leukemia patient must have daily blood transfusions or die. A family begs doctors to do everything possible to keep their elderly mother alive. Parents cannot accept their newborn baby will not survive.

End-of-life issues top the list of ethical dilemmas hospitals face as medical progress enables doctors to extend an endangered life to the hard-to-determine point where they may actually only be dragging out death.

Private dramas like these play out in hospitals every day, rarely hitting the headlines as did the family feud over ending life support for Terri Schiavo in the United States in 2005 or a British couple's fight to save their severely handicapped baby Charlotte Wyatt in 2003 when doctors wanted to give up on her.........................

U.S. Rep. Dave Reichert, Republican from Washington's fast-changing 8th Congressional District, barely had time to sit down in his second term before two challengers started working to defeat him in the 2008 election.

Two Democrats barking at him so early may make Reichert nervous, but that is not necessarily a bad thing.

Reichert is a conservative — maybe too conservative for his district. Yet, he has been willing to stretch himself to independent votes on such matters as the environment and on the absurdity of the government intervening in the Terri Schiavo case. Schiavo was the severely brain-damaged Florida woman.

The 8th District race will be hard fought in both the primary and the general election seasons. Sounds exhausting in a way, but Tom is a welcome addition to an important campaign.

Which is precisely why, given that we're all flawed and imperfect human beings, the vast majority of Americans don't want politicians trying to "legislate morality" from Washington DC. - even if such a thing was possible, which it isn't.

This discussion goes well beyond sex. The Terri Schiavo case was an intrusion by Congress which, despite the fact it was supported by some Democrats, damaged Republicans most in the eyes of the public as the party willing to go out of its way to insert itself into intensely private, end of life discussions among families that had been sorted out through the state legal system.

What Bobby sees, we too see, every day. The Visitors come in and tell us Terri's dead, give the story a rest. But they are the ones who can't let go. They are driven. Their responses to any point are fixed and unbending. They are party liners, one and all. This is ideology, not thought.

What drives them? Is it fear? Guilty conscience? I cannot say, but I find it astonishing. One of our recent Visitors spent many, many hours of intense effort doing what amounted to deny, deny, deny. He was as fixed and ideological as the others, though much better educated. What motivated him to expend such effort?

Provincial authorities of Rio Negro are deciding whether or not to allow terminally ill patients to make a statement refusing medical treatment, Spanish-language Adnmundo.com reports. In response, the Catholic Bishops of Rio Negro have issued a statement, clarifying and reaffirming the Church's teaching on end of life care.

In the statement, the Bishops affirm that the Church has always been against "medical intervention not suited to the condition of the patient". This refers to disproportionate methods of keeping the patient alive, but does not include the basic and necessary requirements of human life such as feeding and hydration.

If Michael were to call in Murder, Inc. to dispose of Terri, then HE has to pay for it. He's too tight-fisted for that! Besides, it looks suspicious if her body is full of bullet holes.

Much better to hire killer lawyers and killer doctors and find a killer judge to rubber stamp the murder plans and the expense accounts.
