Many British Muslims Put Islam First (Worth a Second Look)
CBS NEWS ^ | Aug. 14, 2006 | Patrick Basham

The recent homegrown plot in Britain to blow up transatlantic flights will intensify the fear that the country's 1.6 million Muslims are rejecting political tolerance and free speech for a violent, radicalized version of Islam. There is a real concern that British Muslims do pose a threat to that country and its traditional values. So how prevalent are such radical views among British Muslims?

Some answers are provided by the most comprehensive survey to date of Muslim opinion in Britain. The results from NOP Research, broadcast by Channel 4-TV on August 7, are startling.

This is an old article from August 14th, 2006. But due to the increase in terror threats in the U.K. I felt I should bring this up again for discussion. (Especialy since the Mayor of London came forward today to defend Muslims in his city.)

From the article we learn such things about the U.K.'s Muslims:

45% say 9/11 was a conspiracy by the American and Israeli governments.
one in four British Muslims believe that last year's 7/7 attacks on London were justified because of British support for the U.S.-led war on terror.
30% of British Muslims would prefer to live under Sharia (Islamic religious) law than under British law.
28% hope for the U.K. one day to become a fundamentalist Islamic state.
78% support punishment for the people who earlier this year published cartoons featuring the Prophet Mohammed.
68% support the arrest and prosecution of those British people who "insult Islam."
62% of British Muslims say "No, it should not." When asked if free speech should be protected, even if it offends religious groups.
9% percent of the British Muslim population are considered "hardcore Islamists."
29% of the British Muslim population consider themselves "staunch defenders of Islam." These are said to "aggressively defend their religion from internal and external threats, real or imagined."
3% of British Muslims "took a consistently pro-freedom of speech line on these questions."

The article goes on with this theme...
The Muslim threat to British security is so severe that the assistant London police commissioner, Tarique Ghaffur, has called for an inquiry into the radicalization of young Muslims. Ghaffur sadly describes "a generation of angry young people vulnerable to exploitation."

Thoughts? Comments? Discuss.

Well, I’m a Christian, and I’d hope I could put my adherence to my faith ahead of my loyalty to any political state too.

I’m a Christian too, and I understand what you mean, but Jesus did say...”Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”

And Paul continuously taught to adhear to the local governments as long as it doesn’t cause you to go against God’s will.

Blowing up innocent people and silently applauding and hoping for more innocent bloodshed goes against God’s will.

That’s how I see it. :)

Much Love!

Oh, I’d agree with you. I hope I never am given cause to choose between the two.

Shedding the blood of innocents is an abomination. In fact, I think it says so in the Koran. Of course that doesnt matter to these islamists. Fanatics of all shades are into “selective” reading.

Much love back!
