NEWPORT BEACH A grieving mother stood up in court today and told the reckless driver who killed her 14-year-old daughter in a high-speed crash in 2004 that "the pain only gets worse with time, not better It's too much to bare sometimes."
Pointing to photos of daughter Brianna Moore, Karen Dayyat wept and said the hardest and worst day of her life was when she put flowers on Brianna's grave on her 16th birthday.
"You did this," she yelled at defendant James Dean Ericsson, 23, of Culver City. "You wrecked our lives...There is no bringing Brianna back. You have caused our family a lifetime of pain and needless suffering."
And then Dayyat sat in the courtroom gallery and listened as Superior Court Judge Craig E. Robison sentenced Ericsson, 21, to two years in prison on his guilty plea to one count of vehicular manslaughter and three counts of reckless driving causing injuries.

And he’ll serve what, a third of that?
This was a one car accident; the deceased was a passenger.
Granted, he should be spending at least 10 years behind bars, but why did the 14 year old girl’s parents let her go out with a 20 year old?
if he would have been an illegal...he would be walking the streets today!!!
Come on people he got more time then Ted Kenaday(sic).
You never get over losing a child, but it’s not getting worse with time, and thank God. I don’t think I could have borne it if it did.
No matter whether she should have “gone out” with a 20 year old, she did and the mom didn’t kill her. She could have been going to the store, for all we know.
and you spell it “bear” in this case. This newspaper doesn’t have enough money to pay for editing????
I can’t “bare” my pain either, but i’m bearing it. Some moments better than others.
Well it was at high speed.
But I do admit that I have driven over the speed limit lots of times so I’m not one to talk.
I’ve never had to bury a child but I know people who have.
My heart goes out to you.
God bless.
“This was a one car accident; the deceased was a passenger”
so what’s your point...
“car accident?”...
Try one count of vehicular manslaughter and three counts of reckless driving causing injuries.
Do you have any idea how many people are killed every year from irresponsible idiots like this!!!
Ted Kennedy didnt get a day.
A 21 year old guy driving around with a 14 year old girl?
It's "bear", not "bare".

“A 21 year old guy driving around with a 14 year old girl?”
hey...I just post the articles.LOL
and there are places in America, including TX where 21 yr old guys have 14 year old wives, not to mention 14 year old girl friends and some are even RELATED...I certainly don’t condone it, but it does happen and has for centuries!
Of what relevance is this? They may have left the roadway to avoid the accident, what does this entail?
Teddy Kennedy wasn’t even convicted for leaving the scene of an accident. One law for the Kennedys, another for the rest of us.
This sounds like a tragic case, and a terrible blow to the mother. But it was vehicular manslaughter, not murder. No one runs his car off the road on purpose. I don’t think the judge could reasonably have given a harsher sentence to a young offender who was more foolish and stupid and thoughtless than intentionally evil.
So your OK with the 2 years. Hummm.
One of the comments posted at the end of the article implies that the girl sneaked out without her parents’ knowledge.
He told them he was going to kill them all with him. My son was sitting next to him in the car. No one contacted Justin about testifying in court - or even when the court date was going to be. What kind of screwy legal system is that? The survivors are already screwed up for life - with no legal, medical or insurance help, either. God Bless California.
