ATLANTA -- Don Siegelman and Richard Scrushy were sentenced Thursday and began serving their sentences at a Federal Prison in Atlanta.

They were taken into custody after an emotional day of testimony in the sentencing phase of their trials. Both men were found guilty on June 29th, 2006 for their involvement in a bribery scheme where Richard Scrushy arranged $500,000 in donations to Siegelman's campaign for a state lottery in exchange for a seat on a state hospital regulatory board.

Siegelman was sentenced to seven years, four months in federal prison, 500 hours of community service, and forced to pay $50,000 in fines and $181,000 in restitution.

Scrushy’s sentence was six years ten months, 500 hours of community service, $150,000, due immediately and restitution of $267,000 to the United Way. Scrushy will also be placed on probation for three years once his prison time is served.

Both men plan to appeal their sentence with the 11th Circuit US Court of Appeals in Atlanta.

A close acquaintance of mine spent 7 years in Atlanta’s finest legal facility and he assures me that anybody spending time there will rue the day they ever did anything illegal.

I visited a Georgia State penitentiary once. I was given VIP treatment, surrounded by very large men in black sporting nightsticks. All inmates were required to stand at attention outside their cell. I was invited to inspect a cell, and the young con whose cell it was was afraid, very afraid.

Never ever commit a felony in Georgia.

Spent 30 days on an SC road gang back in the 60’s … cured me. To this day, I feel intimidated when in the presents of a police officer. Fear is a wonderful thing.

FCI Atlanta is a serious prison, think Aryan Brotherhood and The Zulu nation stabbing each other over donuts type serious.

This new perspective should give the dastardly duo a new perspective on corruption and why it is a bad thing to steal money from “We the People” or to sell influence.

Fear may be a wonderful thing, but 30 years of it seems harsh to me. I can tell you that based on what I saw, I won’t break the law. And I was a prison offical, not on the receiving end but the administering end.

Me and a Buddy used to deliver cleaning supplies to Maryland Pen in Jessup commonly know as the “cut”. We drove in, handed our stuff, and hightailed it out every time. But do you what scared me more than the Cut? The DC City Jail. Its run by the US Marshals. Once we were wheeling our cart down past a holding pen and we saw a “woman” with a tight skirt, lipstick, the whole nine yards. I remarked the place couldnt be too bad, becuase they held women in with the men. The snickers from the inmates and disgusted look on our Marshal escort told me the “woman” was packing a johnson..
