Coulter supporter's personal free speech (single most important political right of a citizen) and expression under harassment? Her liberty to express her opinion and her ideas without hindrance, and especially without fear of punishment.

Event: Eight Democratic presidential candidates on Thursday night gathered at Howard University in Washington, D.C., in their latest debate with focus on domestic issues.

• Senator Barack Obama of Illinois said if it were not for a ruling by the Supreme Court decades ago against school segregation, "I would not be standing here."

• On poverty, former senator John Edwards of North Carolina, also the Democratic Party's vice presidential nominee in 2004, said the issue was the cause of his life.

• Representative Dennis Kucinich of Ohio, a staunch opponent of the war, said the Bush administration had wasted billion of dollars on the war. If elected president, Kucinich said, he would cut the Pentagon's budget by half to fund education.

• The court's ruling "turned the clock back" on history, said Senator Hillary Clinton of New York.

• The debate was hosted by the PBS. (PBS to host a Republican debate Sept. 27)
