The chairman of the California Air Resources Board, Robert F. Sawyer, was fired by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger this week amid mounting criticism of the agency's leadership on global warming and air pollution policies.
Sawyer and the governor's office gave sharply differing accounts of why he was let go after 18 months at the helm of what has long been described as the world's most influential air pollution regulatory agency.
"I was fired, I did not resign . The entire issue is the independence of the board, and that's why I got fired," Sawyer . . .
Sawyer said he had declined to fire the agency's embattled executive director, Catherine Witherspoon, and objected when his longtime communications director Jerry Martin was also fired, then reassigned to another agency by the governor's office without notifying him. Finally, last week, he said he was called by a Cabinet secretary who ordered him to limit to three the number of so-called early action measures the board was considering to slow global warming.

"I was deeply disappointed," Schwarzenegger said. "The air board let the federal government off the hook by seeking delay."
Sawyer said he requested a meeting with the governor's chief advisor, Susan Kennedy, to clear up the "mixed signals." Instead he was asked by Kennedy to retire, and when he refused, was handed a letter signed by the governor saying his appointment had been rescinded.
Schwarzenegger's deputy chief of communications, Adam Mendelsohn, said the governor's office did not think the air board or its staff were moving aggressively enough on air pollution and global warming.

We simply must move faster in the economic destruction of California!
Typical of liberals, only want group think and group speak. The bane of Liberalism is the disinfectant of sunlight.
And that applies double to Congressional earmarks, the source of most if not all Congressional corruption.
I knew Arnie was pro-abortion, but thought that he might at least have some economic sense and would balance the budget. It turns out that the people who said he was a muscle-bound jerk were entirely right. It would have been far better to leave Gray Davis in office.
Thank you, Karl Rove, for your great work in California.
“Instead he was asked by Kennedy to retire, and when he refused, was handed a letter signed by the governor saying his appointment had been rescinded.”
In reference to your appointment to CARB, the governor requests a “do over” and will no longer require your services.
Vy are there steal cars in Kaulifornia? You’re fired.
Here's an excellent piece in the Capitol Weekly, including this telling statement: "We don't know how the current administration will take this week's headline of 'State government employee total of 235,461 tops Davis administration.' We know that this governor is comfortable in his own skin and Republicans across the country take great pride in their 'spend and spend' policies that keep them in power."Schwarzenegger faces revolt by GOP in CapitolArnold Schwarzenegger represents the worst aspect of American politics: principle-lacking pursuit of personality. This governor pretended to be a conservative when he thought that was the road to continued accolades, and then he embraced mega-government, finding that it is even easier to buy popularity with excessive government spending -- especially when that spending can be financed on the backs of future taxpayers through debt spending. This is an expensive way to finance his super-ego, but Republicans mostly are fine with this because they get to maintain some chimera of power.
SACRAMENTO Their uneasy coexistence with Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger now at the lowest point in his tenure, Republican state lawmakers are rebelling in increasingly public ways over administration efforts both big and small. As Republicans still reel over Schwarzenegger's partnership with Democrats last year to enact curbs on greenhouse gas emissions, the governor is now championing a healthcare plan they say will be disastrous for the state's economy.
"The governor, contrary to popular Sacramento mythology, has been growing government more rapidly than Gray Davis did during his administration," said Assemblyman Chuck DeVore (R-Irvine). He pointed to a report from the nonpartisan Legislative Analyst's Office that projects a shortfall of more than $6 billion by next year under Schwarzenegger's plan. "What we are trying to do is exercise a modest bit of fiscal responsibility," DeVore said.
Well, look at it this way, Schwarzenegger is appeasing the vast majority of Californians who are passionate about environmental issues. Schwarzenegger does happen to have an “R” after his name, so, in effect, he’s showing that a Republican can be strong on environmental issues like air quality, etc. Perhaps this will help whoever gets the Republican nomination in ‘08, especially if Schwarzenegger is a popular Governor in CA and campaigns hard for the nominee. Just a thought.
In reference to your appointment to ____________, the governor requires subservience and obedience. Obey or be gone!
Kind’a makes your head spin, huh? must be global warming.. ;-)
The New Majority and the RMSP certainly meddled far and wide, amongst other groups .. between Soros and the Rovinator, it’s like they had a competition on to see who could hit make whose party hit bottom first and still claim to be in charge.
Let's embrace big-government spending, huge debt, enviro-whacko science and economically devastating regulation in the name of "air quality." That's a sure winner for the GOP!
Just remember what the Gub said,
‘Together, WE can do great things!”
To who or for who remains to be seen, unfortunately. ;-)
There seems to be an outrcry, by those who brought him to the dance, about Jerry Brown’s use of AB32 litigation and CEQA. Surprise, surprise!

On another note, Hiram is in the news, by none other than Schwarzie’s biographer, Joe Mathews:

You bet!
The Austrian will be a terrific asset for any liberal Republican who wishes to run for president in 08. Austrians make the best mercenaries. You may argue that Northern Germans are the best, but I say Austrians.
I’ve lived in Los Angeles County for many decades... the air is much much better than it was in the past.
As to a “bigger strategy,” I really suggest you research some of Arnold’s enviro whacko programs to see for yourself. His environmental policy comes from Robert F. Kennedy and the UN, and he is right on board with Al Gore. Land grabs, subsidies for junk science, economically devastating global warming regulation. This “grand plan” is to turn us into a form of regional governance and socialism. Pollution or conservation have nothing to do with it.
