DUBYA'S END

BORDER BILL THE LAST BLOW

June 29, 2007 -- PRESIDENT Bush's disastrous second term has not been without its moments. Unfortunately for him, these moments have come primarily when members of his own party have risen up against him to defy his wishes. That's what happened yesterday. For the second time in four weeks, Republicans in the Senate put a stake through the heart of Bush's beloved but politically catastrophic immigration bill.

It's also what happened in the early months of the second term, when Bush chose to nominate his unqualified aide, Harriet Miers, to the Supreme Court - and finally backed down and had her withdraw her name after three weeks of lobbying and complaining.

(snip)

He would not and could not back down on immigration reform, an issue far too close to his heart. But after the Senate first rejected the bill at the end of May, Bush could have left it alone and accepted defeat. He could have seen reason, as he did in January 2004 when he first proposed a piece of legislation and was met with an uprising from his conservative base - whereupon he prudently dropped the subject because he was running for re-election and needed a united and enthusiastic Republican electorate behind him.

(snip)

And perhaps most interesting, Bush chose to believe it was more important to court potential future Republican voters - those illegals who would have gained a "path to citizenship" under the terms of the bill in 13 years' time - rather than listen to the concerns of present-day Republican voters.

Thanks for the laugh.

A squeak by election and Bush starts proclaiming a mandate and declaring he had political capital to spend. I knew we were in trouble at that moment.

Yep! He had a lot of political capital to spend - and astoundingly - did not spend one penny of it! I have trouble wrapping my mind around the way Bush has been acting since he was re-elected. He's a lot more like his father than I ever wanted to believe. I've never had a politician betray me more than George W. Bush has.

He is doing exactly NOTHING to further our cause for the future. He is, in fact, destroying the Republican Party.

But the thought is occuring to me since yesterday - maybe his legacy will be that he reinvigorated the conservatives and made us realize that what they've been spoon-feeding us for the last year is NOT TRUE. People like Rudy Guiliani and lots of others have been trying to cram down my throat that conservatism is dead! We crashed the Senate's phone lines - we're not dead people & we're a force to be reckoned with!

I say the time has come to tell our leaders - "Since you are incapable of leading - get out of the way - we're sending in some new leaders - you're no longer employed by us."

"...they are shilling to american business interests who want cheap, slave labor..."

That will be their demise because, although businesses may give to their campaigns, businesses don't vote - and without the voter, even the top funded candidate won't win. Ross Perot proved that.

The President is a decent man but I think politically, he can be too dense at times. That's why things haven't gone for him in his second term the way he'd hoped, both as a party builder and statesman.

Let's not forget one important point; the absolute failure of his advisers such as Karl Rove. He was one of the architects of this debacle, and part of Bush's failure was giving Rove too much credence. But I agree, Bush's main fault was in allowing his dream of Hispanic assimilation to control him.

Don Quixote was supposedly a fine man; just one with an "Impossible Dream". The GOP has its own Don Quixote.

“Do not misunderestimate W”

I don’t.

He’s still capable of doing a lot of damage.

Ghastly actually. I’m still not able to fathom how it could advance this far.

He used us. He used the conservatives to get in and now all he can think of is his legacy. And you are right, his legacy will be our turning back to true conservatives and away from the Rudy types who want to parse their conservative ideas.

I’ve voted for W about seven times if you include primaries. I’m about to register as an independent.

"I'm as upset as the next person here in regards to President Bush's incorrect position on immigration."

No you're not. Those who are genuinely upset at Bush's position on ILLEGAL Mexicans don't refer to the debacle as "immigration". Only those who seek to cover up the depth and breadth of his outrageous position on this invasion will do that.

I hope this is the last term for Graham and McConnell. I live in Kentucky & I know that I will ACTIVELY work to see someone else elected to McConnell’s seat come next term. I have never before been so angry at my government in all of my 30 years of voting.

I believe you both are right!

Or...to put it another way...
....What Satan meant for evil, God used for good.

This has been a huge wake-up call.....I hope we heed the warning!

We were hanging by a slim thread, and yet God spared us.....this time.

It's driving me crazy that Rush won't put any blame on Bush for this bill.

For the most part it is a Democrat bill. If you look at the numbers in terms of votes you'll see that. The problem with Bush is, he bought into the idea of bi-partisanship; that the one issue he really wanted to secure a legacy could be obtained through a bi-partisan effort. And the RINO's in Congress abetted him by working with the Democrats behind closed doors to craft this POS.

What Rush and others are saying, is that regardless of Bush's interest in this, it never would have gotten this far without major Democrat input and influence (the DIM's would never have bought into a purely Republican bill that made sense - not in the Senate!). Consequently, the bill had little in it for Bush's base to support, thus no way to gain traction otherwise.

“As always they’re trying to put up a smokescreen for the Demrats.”

Of course they are. That is as predictable as the Sun rising in the morning.

But the bill WAS put together by White House people and the Democrats, and Bush was promoting it.

It was HIS bill as much as anyones.

His dream of being the father of the North American Union has been shot down. That was the legacy he was working so hard for.

After the primaries, I will end my registration with the Republican party & I plan to register as an Independent too.

Never again, will any politician be able to assume they have my vote - they will have to earn it from here on out.

When you vote for the lesser of two evils - you still get evil.

Right now, Hillary would win my home state of Ohio, IMO. I agree with Rush that there is an 80% chance of her election in 2008.

This kind of talk is absurd. Democrats are doing everything they can to help terrorists. They clearly do not care about the security of their own country. All citizens are at increased risk of terrorist attacks with Democrats in control.

Democrats are set to destroy the thriving economy we've enjoyed, created by the Bush tax cuts. This economy has grown in spite of a major terror attack, a protracted war and major natural disasters.

It is clear Democrats want to destroy the economy because they're telling us they want to repeal the Bush tax cuts. What person with half a brain would vote for a Democrat if they understand the threat Democrats pose to our economy?

If the citizens of the United States don't like the prices they're paying at the pump, they can thank Democrats. It is Democrats that are standing in the way of domestic oil production and refining. They're perfectly willing to bring this country to it's knees by denying this country the opportunity to become energy independent. Democrats try to fool the public by mandating that car makers need to increase fuel mileage. The market takes care of this problem.

The truth is that this immigration fiasco was created by Democrats with the help of a few Republicans. If it weren't for Republicans this country would be offering amnesty to illegals right now.

If we want secure borders, we had darned sure better have Republicans running congress and a Republican in the WH.

Freepers can expand on this list but I refuse to concede anything to a Democrat. If we do, it's because of our own refusal to get in there and fight.
