DUBYA'S END

BORDER BILL THE LAST BLOW

June 29, 2007 -- PRESIDENT Bush's disastrous second term has not been without its moments. Unfortunately for him, these moments have come primarily when members of his own party have risen up against him to defy his wishes. That's what happened yesterday. For the second time in four weeks, Republicans in the Senate put a stake through the heart of Bush's beloved but politically catastrophic immigration bill.

It's also what happened in the early months of the second term, when Bush chose to nominate his unqualified aide, Harriet Miers, to the Supreme Court - and finally backed down and had her withdraw her name after three weeks of lobbying and complaining.

(snip)

He would not and could not back down on immigration reform, an issue far too close to his heart. But after the Senate first rejected the bill at the end of May, Bush could have left it alone and accepted defeat. He could have seen reason, as he did in January 2004 when he first proposed a piece of legislation and was met with an uprising from his conservative base - whereupon he prudently dropped the subject because he was running for re-election and needed a united and enthusiastic Republican electorate behind him.

(snip)

And perhaps most interesting, Bush chose to believe it was more important to court potential future Republican voters - those illegals who would have gained a "path to citizenship" under the terms of the bill in 13 years' time - rather than listen to the concerns of present-day Republican voters.

Now we will just have to add more to the mix.

Well we agree there. But that is not a small thing.

I'm not sure a fence solves the problem. It probably helps some. But people can get over or under a fence. We have the laws necessary to mitigate the problem already on the books. We do not have the resolve to enforce them. That's the bottom line. If you want to arrest employeers for hiring illegals why not just start with arresting and deporting illegals?

President Bush had two Achilles heels. His support of the
Immigration bill that went down in flames and Harriet Myers.
I have stood by him through the years. When the Immigration
Bill came up a second time I took his picture off my wall
and put it away and out of sight. It made me more sad than angry.

"We have the laws necessary to mitigate the problem already on the books."

Repeat something enough and people will believe it. I want to know who the genius was that came up with it...the one who said our current laws work great. I want to shake that person's hand for making people not believe their own lying eyes. That takes talent.

"Neither the president nor any of the bill's supporters was able to make a convincing argument that illegal immigration would be "reformed" in any way. The bill was a classic case of a supposed fix that would only make things worse."

And furthermore, it was obvious that those pushing this bill--including Bush--did not even know what was in it! And it was about 1,000 pages long--loaded with hidden bombs!

Only a fool would have supported it! And the America people realized that Fools--or self-serving psychopaths; it's often hard to tell the difference--are running the government.

"Bush will now only govern until the end of his term in an entirely defensive manner..."

And if Bush continues to refuse to secure the Mexican Border and halt further illegal immigration--he should be impeached.

This is the big difference between the Left and Middle America--between Democrats and Republicans:

The Left is delusional. Middle America faces reality.

The Left will stand by its man no matter what. Middle America will stand by truth no matter what.

When Leftist politicians fail the United States, the Left circles the wagons and protects them. When ANY politicians fail the United States, they immediatly loose the support of Middle America.

Bush has lost the support of Middle America.

Do you think the immigration reform bill would have slowed the rate of illegal immigration? If its 100 per day now, how many would it have been a year from now if the bill passed?

If you really want new legislation... let’s propose this... let’s propose that any law enforcement official, or member of the juciciary who encounters an illegal alien and doesn’t do their part to have the illegal arrested and deported from our country is subject to prison time themselves. Will you support that legislation?

I think the fence will be built, albeit slowly and with much thrashing and gnawing.

It would go much faster and be cheaper if they used illegal alien labor. (SARC)

Bush can recover and reap a fantastic legacy if he gets militant on building the border fence.

Guess you all forgot about the thing called a VETO?

Gawd, I thought even you weren't stupid enough to ignore the fact that Bush wanted the immigration bill and would not have vetoed it. That was the entire problem, you kool-aide addled idiot.

You have to get an employer to turn in the illegals first.. Yea..those current laws work great.

You think that’s the only way to catch illegal aliens? Is by having their employeers turn them in when they apply? LOL

I fully expect the workplace enforcement increase that started last year to be turned off like a light switch. I expect the "virtual fence" to continue as an ongoing boondoggle that never delivers on its promises. I see little more of Duncan Hunter's fence being built over the last 18 months. Sutton will continue to prosecute BP Agents to make them fearful about doing their jobs. The NG will be pulled from the border. The request for a visa tracking system will not be introduced separately from other provisions. And no more BP agents will be added.

Bush will be petulant and vindictive about his defeat, the consequences to the party and this country be damned.

Don’’t you get it? The employers are covered by the law because the do there part...they get an ID..that’s all they are required to do. It would take an act of Congress to change that...but obviously our Congress can’t come up with an immigration solution anyone can agree on so I don’t know why we are even talking about further legislation. It ain’t gonna happen.

Now here’s compromise... let’s pass legislation that says anybody who is a member of law enforcement, the judiciary, or who hires “service workers” that doesn’t do their part to report, catch, judge, and remove illegals from our country are subject to prison sentences themselves. I’m good with that.

I’m disgusted with the President.

With the winning of a second term he had a massive hammer to wield; that of no re-election worries. Without re-election concerns a President has the rare opportunity to be a true statesman.

So President Bush used this opportunity to outrage his base, damage & possibly destroy his party, and betray the country.

Just plain disgusting!

I’m wondering if Bush has his Justice Department looking into a way to pardon all the illegals in this country - after all, Carter pardoned all the Vietnam draft dodgers.

So how are you going to catch them? Have them sue their employers for low wages...even though they have no right to sue since they aren’t citizens and have no right to American legal council? Bahahaha! How about you get your own army and go arrest the whole state of Arizona, farmers, business owners and illegals all??? Bahahaha!
