DUBYA'S END
BORDER BILL THE LAST BLOW
June 29, 2007 -- PRESIDENT Bush's disastrous second term has not been without its moments. Unfortunately for him, these moments have come primarily when members of his own party have risen up against him to defy his wishes. That's what happened yesterday. For the second time in four weeks, Republicans in the Senate put a stake through the heart of Bush's beloved but politically catastrophic immigration bill.
It's also what happened in the early months of the second term, when Bush chose to nominate his unqualified aide, Harriet Miers, to the Supreme Court - and finally backed down and had her withdraw her name after three weeks of lobbying and complaining.
(snip)
He would not and could not back down on immigration reform, an issue far too close to his heart. But after the Senate first rejected the bill at the end of May, Bush could have left it alone and accepted defeat. He could have seen reason, as he did in January 2004 when he first proposed a piece of legislation and was met with an uprising from his conservative base - whereupon he prudently dropped the subject because he was running for re-election and needed a united and enthusiastic Republican electorate behind him.
(snip)
And perhaps most interesting, Bush chose to believe it was more important to court potential future Republican voters - those illegals who would have gained a "path to citizenship" under the terms of the bill in 13 years' time - rather than listen to the concerns of present-day Republican voters.

MOVE OVER JIMMY CARTER........SOMEONE MORE DESPISED THAN YOU IS COMING TO VISIT!!!!!!!!!!!
That's certainly food for thought. I'm going to do that in the next primary - a lot can happen between now & then - and I hope it does! But if come next primary - the people in my party vote for a RINO to be our nominee - I am way out of here.
When I was finally old enough to vote - the first time I registered as an Independent - but quickly changed to Republican when I realized I couldn't vote in the primaries here in Kentucky. It's very frustrating to feel like your voice is not being heard.
Good for you, dangerdoc. This is the right way to fight this war—become engaged. We must be a team if we’re going to dislodge Democrats. There are many vulnerable RINOS and we must fight to dislodge them, too.
The left has something on him , that’s all I can think of. Just look at how he’s backed down every time they attacked him. Too many weird things , working with Kennedy , letting Sandy Berger go , something is not right with this picture.
Immigration is never going to get solved this way pal...better start learning Spanish or possibly Arabic.

It should. Please spread the word about it. They are planning the demise of our sovreignty and setting our kids up to live in the country formally known as America.
I plan to do just that. I am emailing it to everyone on my email list. Talk about pulling the wool over our eyes! Thanks for posting that.
Look. It’s behind us. We won which shows that if our voices are loud enough, we can prevail. Let’s continue on and build on this one victory. Bush is history. He’s irrelevant. I’m more worried about what comes next.
If a Dem gets in ( which is very likely) we will witness the great American Socialism Experiment . Forget about the individual then .
yep... our president is learning that when you align yourself with that 10% that is “undecided” or “in the middle”... that just means that 90% don’t agree with you.
This bill was not about immigration. It was about making 12+ million invaders legal with the stroke of a pen and with hundreds of billions of my/our money.
Is that what wanted?
If they had demonstrated over the last six years they were at least serious about the borders then this bill would have had a chance.
Oh, about speaking spanish, that's exactly what Bush wants for his "new America".
We are now one of the largest Spanish-speaking nations in the world. We're a major source of Latin music, journalism and culture. Just go to Miami, or San Antonio, Los Angeles, Chicago or West New York, New Jersey ... and close your eyes and listen. You could just as easily be in Santo Domingo or Santiago, or San Miguel de Allende. For years our nation has debated this change -- some have praised it and others have resented it. By nominating me, my party has made a choice to welcome the new America. As I speak, we are celebrating the success of democracy in Mexico. George Bush from a campaign speech in Miami, August 2000. |
Here is an excerpt of a good critique of that speech:
In equating our intimate historic bonds to our mother country and to Canada with our ties to Mexico, W. shows a staggering ignorance of the civilizational facts of life. The reason we are so close to Britain and Canada is that we share with them a common historical culture, language, literature, and legal system, as well as similar standards of behavior, expectations of public officials, and so on. An essay on multi-culturalism and immigration.
That thought has flashed through my mind as well. Either that, or he was a plant from the git-go. I've even wondered if maybe the left doesn't have something on Bush Sr.
You're right - too many weird thing - something definitely is not right with this picture.
That is GREAT! Not so much the sombrero, but that little mexican mustache ought to be painted on every picture of him from now on! And McConnell looks like a cartoon turtle. He’s a big botoxer too, I can tell.
hear, hear!
He caused the backlash himself Johnnies. Pulled some really dumb policy moves that caused the conservatives to go after him. Nobody’s fault but his own. I voted for him twice as he was the lesser of two evils.
I voted for W twice. I really thought he was going to be great the first time. He has been a HUGE disappointment.
IMHO, I have a solution. W resigns and Dick Cheney takes over. Cheney then is free to kick butt seeing that he could NEVER be elected POTUS anyway. He could appoint Newt or Fred Thompson for VP.
He could stop these ridiculous ROE in Iraq. He could build a 2000 mile fence from the Gulf to the Pacific. ETC.
A good buddy of mine was saying they had something on Bush almost since his 2nd term started. AT first I thought he was crazy but time after time after time Bush made some dumb move. He let the left punk slap him all over the place without uttering a word in his own defense. Outside of the WOT he really stopped representing me .
