We don’t se the TB vaccine—BCG—in the U.S. Ironically enough, BCG is one of the world’s most widely administered vaccines, and yet TB is the leading infectious cause of death worldwide after HIV/AIDS. This is because the vaccine doesn’t prevent against infection or developing symptoms after infection, except for some severe forms of TB (TB meningitis) in infants.
The vaccine confers no protective effect in adolescents or adults. It’s only useful from a macro perspective in areas where TB is common.
A third of the world’s population is infected with the germ that causes TB. Roughly 10% of them will develop the disease at some point in their lifetime.
