MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Former Alabama Gov. Don Siegelman was sentenced to more than seven years in federal prison and former HealthSouth CEO Richard Scrushy got nearly seven years Thursday in a bribery and corruption case that the judge said damaged public trust in state government.
Supporters of both men testified at their sentencing hearing, listing their good deeds as attorneys pleaded with U.S. District Judge Mark Fuller to show mercy.
"While it is true the good far exceeds the bad, I must impose a fair punishment to reassure all that come before this court that justice is blind," Fuller said in sentencing Siegelman.
Siegelman was fined $50,000 due immediately, plus $181,325 to a state agency where prosecutors said kickbacks were made. He is to perform 500 hours of community service when his sentence of seven years, four months is completed.
Scrushy was fined $150,000 due immediately, plus ordered to pay restitution of $267,000 to be paid to United Way of Central Alabama. He also was ordered to perform 500 hours of community service when released.
Both are to be on supervised release for three years when their terms end.
Both have promised appeals.

Screw the liberal media.
Interesting....
Must be democrats as they weren’t called evil republicans in the AP rambling.
Former Democrat Governor goes to jail for 7 years.....it is still sinking in.
Don Seigleman is a dem...a rotten to the core dem!
Scrushy is a co-conspiritor. Don’t know his affiliation.
But his kids go to the same Christian school mine did.
He now says he is a minister.
Don’t know about that either.
Democrat 'Culture Of Corruption'.
Contrast this crook with our present Republican governor Bob Riley. (Our outstanding senator Republican Jeff Session was instrumental in defeat of the Immigration Bill)
Prosecutors say Siegelman and Scrushy have shown no remorse

I get all tear’d up when I see that one. Thanks! ;-)
Of course, not. And the fact this is Alabama, where many people associate it with being a Republican conservative state, is even better: some people just assume that he must be a Republican.
They actually tried to blame their prosecution on Karl Rove.
(ahem) I stole it from your home page, lol.
Briarwood???? If so, we are somewhat in the same neighborhood.
I think that I might just sleep better tonight than last night.
You have Freepmail
Which didn't keep him from being elected Governor, of course...
