As I understand it, Duesberg is saying that it is chromosome defects that create cancerous cells that can then multiply. The causes of the chromosome (not gene) mutation can be due to the affects of the common carcinogens or can just be a fluke. The fact of the matter is that S**t happens and getting cancer is to a large extent just a matter of being unlucky.
If true this is a very important (re)discovery because, IMHO, you will never find the cure for any disease without a thorough understanding of the root cause of that disease. It is a certainty that the search for a cancer cure based on the genetic mutation theory has failed. I think it is time to give the Duesberg approach a hard look and some serious research money, something that he has lacked due to his position, rightly held, that HIV is not the cause of AIDS.
Ultimately, it's always a roll of the dice, but the dice aren't fair they're leaded. If you have a genetic predisposition to cancer or if you've been exposed to carcinogens (asbestos, tobacco, dioxin, etc.) you vastly increase your risk.
